You know - who is spamming who here?
I don't see the orignal, but for some reason I see yours.
~~ snerk ~~
hee hee.....
there was an orignal post from a cnsneakers whatever.
We're getting overrun by this spam now.
I'd dump the chinese sneaker spam guy into the bozo filter bin with
Loogy and the rest of the assholes, but I don't want to provoke an
international event: the sneaker guy would complain.
I am truly sorry that I do not visit newsgroups in exactly the same
way all you guys do. Uh, no I'm not.. Anyway, if you all just let me
mark them and leave it alone, you will find your own experience much
better, as I will mine. And please don't tell me how to read the
groups, I have my reasons. So for now, if you accept the fact that
once in a while you may see a dot, and I have a better experience all
around, we will all be much better off... Thank you for your
understanding.
I find the chinese-sneakerspam stuff more interesting and far more
intellectually based than the droolings about NASCAR and guitars that
infest this newsgroup. :>)
Personally, I find your anti-spam posts, even if only a dot, much more
enjoyable than the bullshit from Harry, Don, and JimH.
Help yourself, and don't feel badly about it!

John *H*
(Not the other one!)
There he goes again: Herring's first post of the day, and he's calling
out by name already.
That is exactly why I note it as spam, and then leave the brief
subject line so those who wish to read them can, and free speech is
not stifled. And to saltys post, I just don't see how 3-4 dots a day
can be much more harmful than me trying to hash through 50 word
subject lines that take up my whole screen. Not to mention, a good way
to have your cake and eat it too, would be to use your filters to kick
anything with the word "spam" in the subject line, that way you could
still watch me and the others in our other OT posts... Are you all
going to tell me that you can't kill anything with spam in the subject
line?
really guys, a dot or even three is nothing. It's funny, we are able
to watch the spam rejection we run on our systems, realtime, live. It
is frekin amazing. We filter nearly 300,000 per minute from one of our
servers running about 1500 client mail boxes. That's just what gets
bounced before the other systems we have take over. I have a mailbox
that is over 15 years old, and I only get 10-15 spams a day, most
folks get a lot more than that. Anyway, I just don't see why three or
four dots a day is so much to worry about in this environment, if it
is, someone could explain it to me?
I think a general convention like the one Tim and I try to use is the
best way to go. We do not want to censor free speech, so we make it
easier to kill, at the same time leaving it for those who are
interested. Start the subject line with either "OT-***", or SPAM-****,
then those who wish to filter them out (my mail program does it so I
know your big special readers can too).
Kill file me if you must, you got filters, use em'. Or learn how to
use them correctly, and let me continue to "enlighten" you all with my
simple minded crap...
Please explain how three or 4 dots a day, can be more trouble for you
than me having to scroll down pages of 50 word subject lines in my
viewer. Then explain to me why you just don't bite the bullet and
filter anything with the words "spam" in the subject line. Am I
missing something here?

Scott, I have to agree with salty. Folks can tell it is spam just by
reading the title of the thread. I believe you and Tim have actually made
things worse by replying to the spam messages. It was never this bad
before you started doing so.
Why not just ignore it?
Well Jim, evidently what Scott and I are doing is a public service
backfired. When you use Goober Gruups, you get to see titles like
this:
"Mexicans are angry that the United States might protect its own
borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and stay
indefinitely. Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind
these Mexicans. Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when
you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave. But I say,
"I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and
swept the floors. I've done all the things you don't like to do.
I'm...."
And that's a minor one.
It's like walking though an old house and always having to dodge the
cobwebs hanging from the ceiling.
I'm in the process of getting a REAL news reader, and I'll quit
marking SPAM so it doesn't interfer and inconvenience any one else.
Of course the REAL newsreader might not be up to par with Soggy Dogz,
so he may as well leave me in the bin. I don't mind.
Have you tried tried old Outlook Express?
I just ignore them or hit delete when I first see them.
Gee, thanks for the nice words John.

OE works fine for NG's and mail and is most likely already on their
computers.
If your Internet Service Provider does not support NG's, there are several
"free" ones
that could be used.
Personally, I subscribe to GigaNews, have for years and it's been almost

Calm down. Look up above. Wasn't it you that asked, "What am I missing?"
*You* may not have a problem using googlegroups, but because googlegroups
(and others) get their feed from
Usenet, they tend to screw up Newsgroups.

I just don't understand why everyone is getting so upset over 3-4 one
character posts in one day, when Tim and I have made it clear it makes
it lot's easier for us to read. All you all have to do is filter or
ignore a couple of threads, why the hell is everyone getting so
excited. Can't kill a thread or two to allow someone else to have an
easier time of it, so be it.
>I just don't understand why everyone is getting so upset over 3-4 one
>character posts in one day, when Tim and I have made it clear it makes
>it lot's easier for us to read.
Well, let me put it this way - why aren't you using a newsreader that
filters the spam out so you don't have to see it.
The problem is this - you kill the spam for you, but you create spam
for others by killing the spam. It makes no sense. Once it appears,
you mark it read, it goes away right? I'm not that familar with
googlegroups because it's a true abortion of a web reader.
You want a newsreader, I'll give you one - no charge. :>)
-----------------
It's fine by me. I don't see any of the stuff anyway. All I am suggesting
is that you may have all you need
right now on your computer to read directly from a newsgroup server, using a
program you already have, namely OE. That way, you (and Tim) won't be
bothered by lengthy spam at all, and enjoy a much cleaner way of viewing
and posting to Newsgroups.
That's all.
Eisboch
You may be a little bit confused. There is an Internet Explorer v7, but
Outlook Express v6 is and will be the final version of that one. There is a
new version for Vista.
I've been using OE v6, and it's earlier versions, for my day to day Usenet
reading for many years.
You will need a news server to use OE but there are free ones available that
I'm quite sure would satisfy your needs.
Google search for free Usenet servers and see if you can find one you like.
Not to sound like an elitist, but I've occasionally tried viewing this and
other newsgroups via Googlegroups.
It's terrible. To make matters worse, the "forum" style invites posting
that does not follow Usenet convention or tradition.
Often, I think some posters think it's an original subject forum developed
by Google. They don't always realize that Google is simply snatching it
from Usenet.
Minor thing maybe, but even the fact that a "real" newsreader ..... even OE
.... allows quoted references to be marked either
with a ">" or by color or other means. It keeps track of who said what
for quoting purposes. I've noticed that posts originating from Google do
not have that feature. If several people make a comment, sometimes it's
hard to track the attributes.
I usually try to underscore a google post with ----------------------------
or something when responding, just to keep track.

Actually Tom, what you are saying does make sense, that when we diddle
with a spammer it opens up spam for everyone else unless we're blocked
in a bin.
i may be slow but I still have army boots.
>I just don't understand why everyone is getting so upset over 3-4 one

Essentially those are 3 or 4 off topic, meaningless posts per day in
response to something that most of us don't even see in the first
place.
Server sites like Supernews do an excellent job of killing spam before
it goes any further.
I am about out, but I will make this final point. I don't use OE,
don't want to open that can of worms on anything here. I use a web
based package with anti-spam add on packages and mods we have
developed over the last decade. Out of some 200,000 spams that hit my
15 year old mailbox daily (one box of sereral), 90% never get though
to the pop server at all, another 9.5+% get tagged through a rating
system based on several aspects of the message/headers, origionator,
etc.. and about 15-20 a day get through, with a high rating and
clearly marked as spam. I can also set my server side module to bounce
them too. Every day or two, one or two spams might get through,
untagged, not a big deal from my perspective. Our server
administration is set up similarly, web based, billing, encryption,
everything. All I need here to run my business is a laptop with a
browser, and a text editor. What I am saying is we can do anything we
do, on almost any computer, anywhere. We have worked for over a decade
to get to that point (run a 24/7 business, and have a life too). I
guess if I have to set up readers, install OE, set up a news server,
etc, everytime I rebuild a system, or go to a friends house for a few
hours, want to go on vacation, it' just time for a newsgroup vacation.
Too bad those great news readers don't have an "ignore thead" button,
that would solve everything.. too bad.. Later.
>Crap, you are all starting to sound
>like our aol clients.. things change, new techniques come forward.. Oh
>forget it.. have your insult fest....
Scot, I don't think anyone is trying to insult you, just point out
that there is "something" wrong with the way you are reading the
newsgroup. You really shouldn't be seeing the kind of things that you
describe.

They do. I just hit it.

Well, that's a wonderful solution for your email pop server, but
newsgroups use news servers to gather articles, not pop servers.
Dick got my point... He hit ignore thread button... And we can stil
talk in other threads I suppose.

>guess if I have to set up readers, install OE, set up a news server,

I understand your point, but I think you are confusing something.
These aren't server side problems - they are client side problems. And
the solution is to use a reader, on your laptop, that clears the spam
for you.
Secondly, if you are using a direct Usenet feed, then you are going to
see them. I use Easynews as a feed which uses the Supernews model for
spam. Very little gets through. I had a conversation with one of
Easynew's techs when I donated a ton of idle server time (I only use
about 15% of my alloted download bandwidth to the Space Watch and the
Dana Farber Research Institute for use in their research) and she told
me that they clean roughly 1,200 spam messages a day, but some gets
through. I don't see the China spam stuff unless you dot it and label
it something else. That's what I'm talking about - I don't even know
it's there unless you or Tim dot it.
Maybe I'm missing the point - I'm willing to admit I'm wrong about
this, but it seems to me that you are looking at it the worng way
around.
>Dick got my point... He hit ignore thread button... And we can stil
>talk in other threads I suppose.
Hey - send me your phone number - I've lost it - again.
Now you are just trying to get me in trouble;)
You missed the point. Simply use a decent news reader program with filters.
As I stated, I don't find the chinaspam crap annoying.

>Keeeeerist, my only problem is everyone crying about a dot!!!
Dots are dangerous. You start with one dot and then it's two dots and
you think you have everything under control then it's three dots, then
six dots but it's fine, you can quit anytime you want - the dots don't
control you then it's twelve dots, twenty four dots and the next thing
you know, you're in the gutter and heading to dot rehab meetings
standing up and saying:
I'm Scott and I'm a dotaholic. :>)
My fault, I misread your post. Didn't realize you were using someone else's
computer.
My earlier comment still stands, so don't go bugging out on us.
LOL!
When I am away from my machines, I get my emails and newsgroup via a USB

i thougt the selection page looked a bit odd. But anyway, that's ok at

nuts with AOL! I'm surprised they haven't tanked a long time ago.
but that was disgussed in another thread when Soggydog thought I
should be reported for terms of violation, when there was nothing
violated.
Oh well. Go ahead. Make My Day!
Baggage... All I need is a teahouse or a library, even if they lose my
luggage or it falls off the boat, in the campfire, gets stolen. It was
something that we took years to work out with different providers and
developers, we wanted that from day one. The first hosting servers we
had, we had to convince a NOC that "hosting" was going to be a great
business and they should let us have more than 5 IP's per machine;)
Before that, they only provided dedicated servers to individual
businesses. We had a lot to do with the origional development of their
first automated billing, and GUI based web administration of client
websites, email, other bells and whistles.. But from the beginning we
knew we wanted everything to eventually be available securly, with a
simple browser.. In the beginning we could run things, but needed ssh
or similar and pgp... We did all this so we can provide 24/7 service,
within reason, or get to a computer and make adjustments, from about
anywhere, anytime. That allows us to go pretty much anywhere we want,
as long as we know we have a phone for emergency calls, and a computer
with a browser.. And they are almost anywhere.
We have gotten calls say at a friends for dinner. Something simple
like someone has used up their disk space. We can go in quickly, check
the email boxes, usually empty the box, or if they wish, increase the
bandwidth for their account, and be back on the water in 10 minutes.
With the cell card for the laptop, we can work from just about
anywhere...
The biggest benefit is mrs. JW can come out and play with me and the
kids, even if we are going visiting half way across the state. Or take
a couple of weeks in Florida with my bud and know we have access to
everything as soon as we hit the ground and get to his house. Works
for us.
Tom, I'll send you mine as Scott's proxy.
Sounds good to me - teach Scott to mess around with dots.
Freakin' dots. :>)

You have seen my boat right? I have a grill and we are known to get

it tasted about that old, too!
Well, now that you have mentioned it. I had a friend in college who
used to work mfg. "Spiral Notebooks", and every day before he came
home from work, he used a company vacumm to rid himself of paper
punchout "dots". there was a guy in the dorm that was a real jerk.
loud pompous jerk and most didn't like him, and very few tolorated

My buddy went home for Christmas break and got a hold of his uncle and
broght back to school about a 20 gallon garbage back full of "dots",
anyhow the day before the dorm floor fool returned, we somehow picked
his lock with a drivers license. (a trick that in cases can still be
done) and you guessed it. When he got back from break and opened the
door? Well, he was finding dots 'til the semester was over....
