The LX has more horsepower. If I recall correctly, the numbers used to
160 vs. 185, but I think the current LX makes more than that. I don't
recall how they got the extra power, but I'd guess it might be a different
manifold, maybe a different cam, and perhaps a 4-barrel carb.

Thanks. I guess theres goes my hop up plans. Mucho $.

Hello, it's dlo again. Thanks for responding to my reply. This follow
up post might make you feel a little better. I didn't mention in my
earlier post that all the changes in the LX only amount to 7 or 8 hp
increase (according to the same Trailer Boats magazine article).
I think that you could get the same performance boost in other (cheaper)
ways.
Some suggestions:
1) Lighten load. Take out every unneeded item in your boat.
2) Resurface and wax bottom. It should be perfectly straight.
3) Tune up motor
4) Install a stainless steel prop
I once upgraded a 5.0L to a 5.0 LX with these items. I had the shop do
the work and it cost $988, in 1991 $'s. It was more than worth it, as
fuel consumption overall was down, poweband width was much greater, and
top speed improved as well.
The total parts cost was about $500, as I recall.
I don't think these changes are going to get more than a couple mph
unless
1) he is seriously overloaded
2) has a very bad bottom (if it's that bad, send it back)
3) has a very poorly tuned engine
I missed the original post, so I don't know the original poster's goal.
But, if he is looking for top end, a swap to a faster boat is probably the
best option in the long run. If he is looking for modest gains in
acceleration and skiability, a prop change might accomplish that.
Try some 4, 5, or 6 bladed props, or one of the variable pitched props.
The little 4 cyl engines are good dependable, economical engines, but
there is only so much performance you can squeeze out of them...
Good luck,

No. But on the L vs. the LX, some people have responded to me(I'm the
original poster) that the heads, intake and exh. manifold are all
different.
