I have no experience with the cavitation plate mounted trolling motors, in my
experience however Minn-Kota makes very high quality trolling motors with
better features than comparably priced competitors. I am running a 65lb thrust
24 volt Maxxum bow-mount on my boat right now and couldn't be happier. Good
luck whatever you choose.

The Second Amendment isn't about deer hunting.
I have a transom-mount Minn Kota Riptide 55 lb. model. It pushes a
13' tinny well.
Minn Kota tells you that bow mount gives you more control for the same
thrust. So if you are pushing more than 13' and 600 lbs, pulling with
a bow mount might be your best bet.
Also, if you will be using it in salt, I believe that the Riptide is
the only series you can use and it comes bow or stern mount, with no
engine mount option.

Unfortunately, I too have no experience with the engine-mounted units,
but I'll add my Stamp of Approval for Minn Kota: I have a 30-lb unit
pushing Near Cove (Far Cove's dinghy), and it works great.
The Party Line is that the Riptide is the only one to use in salt
water, but I "live on the edge": Near Cove's motor is an El Cheapo
Enduro, and I've been using it in salt water for 2 years now. No sign of
corrosion. I figure I can buy a $150CDN Enduro every 3 yrs, or a $500
Riptide every 10...
I WOULD like the Maximizer cct, though...

If that is true, you are better off buying something like a Maxxum 40T
(with Maximizer) and putting a plastic bag over the head, taped around
the shaft & power wires. Not only would it be saltwater-proof but
also it would be immersible. The Riptides are not immersible because
water will run down the shaft from the head and ruin the motor (unless
you seal the shaft with silicone).
Immersibility is important is you are using the motor with on a
sailing dighy.
I have sent an email to Minn Kota asking about the Riptide
differences.
In addition to the potted electronics in the head, Minn Kota has
advised me of the following additional differences:
"The RT motors are built with different parts made for saltwater which
are stanless steel parts. The lower unit has different layers of paint
to protect it from corrosion. "
