I am interested in opinions on the 175 hp 15' Whaler Rage jet boat. I am in the
market for my first boat and this seems like a great all-purpose boat.

I want to know more about the reliablility of jet boats as well as the
performance of the Rage from people who own or have been on one. Is the
maintenance and reliability better or worse than for outboards? I am looking
for a small all-purpose trailerable boat to be used for inshore and lake
fishing, waterskiing, and cruising. The price of the Rage is around $15,000.
I have heard that Boston Whalers hold their value very well, so I figured it
might be sorth the extra cash to get the whaler.

Any input that can be given would be greatly appreciated.
Pete

Hi Pete,
I can't tell you much about the Rage but the 175HP V6
is awesome. My new Jazz is topping out at 60 MPH and
it gets out of the hole very fast. The only draw back
I have seen is cleaning the weeds out of the intake grate
when the water is 60 degrees. I've heard they make a special
rake for this problem now. I have also found that I am getting
better mpgs than with the old 90HP sportjet. I was worried
That all that extra power was going to cost me in mpgs
but at crusing speeds (30-40) the engine hardly has to
work. The 90HP was fairly reliable. I had a few problems
with it but they were all fixed under warrenty. They were
mostly stator problems and I was assured that that
problem has been corrected. (I'm sure the boat salesmen
will tell you anything) The best thing I can say about jets
is that they will go places prop boats can't touch.
Happy Jetting,
Wally

I just bought a Boston Whaler 1992 Sport Classic with a Mercury 40 HP
motor. There have been more Boston Whalers sold than any other small
boats. The Whaler is unsinkable and gives you a very stable ride. The
Whalers hold their value very much and most people hold on their Whalers
for at least 5-10 years and sometimes longer. A brand new Boston Whaler
Sport 13 would be in the neighborhood of about $12,000 without some
accessories. I bought mine for $ 6,000 and it included many accessories. I
bought through the Internet under Boats For Sale. I recommend a used
Boston Whaler over a new one unless you a ton of money.
