Here's a summary of Yachting Key West Race Week 1994. Since you can
read about it in all your rags, I'll try to concentrate on things that
might not be mentioned.

This event is becoming larger and more grand prix every year (I've
been to the past 3)! There were lots of loaded (with pros) boats, in
every section.

This year they split the races into two different circles, and we
raced on the large boat circle.

The conditions Monday, and Wednesday through Friday were 20+ knots
with more or less unvarying direction. Wednesday seemed like the
windiest day, but there was more chop on Monday 'cause the wind was
from a different direction. The universal strategy was go to ``go
left, young woman'' on the beats. Therefore, the strategic game
wasn't very rich this year.

Tuesday, the wind was lighter (12 knots), and there were pressure
differences across the course (again, left on the beats was good), and
some shifts.

As this sort of thing goes the regatta was a gear buster, and for most
crews it was probably ``survival mode'' sailing.

In spite of an ``improved VPP'' which is supposed to level things up,
in IMS, newer was generally better---Infinity, a new N/M 49, won the
section, with a near perfect score, and their one second place was by
three seconds!

The oldest boat in the IMS fleet, Merrythought, got great starts,
seemed to paint by the numbers strategically, but just couldn't seem
to sail to their rating (except in the more strategically challenging
Tuesday race, where they got a 2nd).

The new VPP doesn't seem to have helped the Tripp 47s either---Titan
still finished out of the money.

The N/M 43s did well, and seemed to be some of the funnest action out
there. Flash Gordon (Farr 39) ended up winning the section, but it
took them a while to get going. The Shore/Sobstad crew took Flash
over from UK, with Terry Hutchinson at the helm, and they claim
they're still learning the boat.

The two brand new Taylor 41 boats (Orion and Sheerness), did poorly,
fighting it out with two J/44s for last in that division. The Taylor
42s couldn't seem to keep up either.

There was a Beneteau IMS 40.7 (an ILC 40 design), which finished in
the middle. It wasn't clear if the boat, or the crew, which
was a Japanese ``training crew'', was at fault.

The new Mumm 36 class seemed fueled by more European interest than
anything else. It had a somewhat ``sponsored'' flavor to it. The Aero
Sail (a sailing subsidiary of Daimler Benz) team had two boats, crewed
by lots of strapping youths wearing matching everything, skippered by
German Olympic medalists (Joacim Schumann, and I don't remember the
other guy) and support out the wazoo. They had a monster 70 foot
Hateras for VIPs to watch the races, and some other miscellaneous
craft---those center console rigs with overkill quantities of
horsepower. Another German syndicate (Thomas-I-Punkt) won the
section. Pigs in Space won the Lauderdale-Key West Race, but ran
aground doing it. They had various problems during the week,
including kinking their mast, and taking an I-flag, on the last day.

The J/35 class seemed pretty lackluster this year (but better than
last year) Too bad.

The stories from the Melges 24 class were amazing. It seems they have
their own notions of the racing rules. It doesn't matter port or
starboard, it's just whoever gets there first. The starts are
supposed to be particularly amusing. Everybody shoves their boat into
a hole on the line, (if it's too small, they'll make room), then holds
onto one another's stancions, luffing. At the gun everybody shoves
off! Talked to a guy who said another boat literally drove up his
transom before the start. His crew grabbed the boat and threw it back
off.

Never a protest flag to be seen.

Apparently the race committee came down to the docks before the race
on Friday and warned the class, at large, that if they didn't start
seeing either more flags or less collisions, the committee would
protest the boats themselves. I guess that helped a little.

Both the Melges and the J/80s seemed to hold together quite well
despite the gearbuster nature of the conditions. The Melges sounded
especially difficult to sail upwind in those conditions.

As for me, I went to get humbled by the best, and remind myself
of how little I know. I succeeded this year, as in years past. We
raced a chartered J/33, Moon Dawg.

An SR-33 won our class, but only 1/4 point behind was a Beneteau First
435, featuring Morgan Reeser (Olympic medalist), then came an Oyster
42, followed by two more SR-33s, then a sistership J/33. The big
boats really stretched on the breezy, short chop beats, then the
SR-33s made up on the runs.

There was another J/33, Troubador, which was down there to race, but
broke her rig Sunday while practicing.

Anyhow, we weren't really in the hunt, mostly because we couldn't
point with the rest of the fleet upwind in the heavy breeze. After
the fact, I suspect that our rig was a little sloppy---we checked it
out before the races, and it looked fine, but we didn't have nearly
the amount of breeze or backstay that we had during the races. Our
boat speed during the lighter Tuseday race was good, but we lacked
strategic planning.

We switched the driver, tactician and trimmers around a couple times
with no marked improvement, so we went away, at least happy that it
was no one particular persons fault :^)

I also attended a panel discussion on ``The IMS Today''. Panel
members included Jim Taylor, Bruce Farr, Bruce Nelson, Bill Tripp,
Brit Chance, and the chairman of the US Sailing's IMS owner's
committee (forget his name).

It was somewhat depressing. The rule produces pretty cool GP boats,
but it doesn't seem to be working for any other purpose.

The designers all like it, but as was emphasized by John Bonds (Exec
Director of US Sailing, and MC of the event), the sport can't afford
the rule unless lots of ordinary joes get certificates. The article
``Divide and Conquer'' in February's Sailing World, gives a fairly
optimistic summary of the state of the rule, which seems to reflect
the designers opinion of it.

In response to the designers, there were three owners who got up and
``asked questions'' (aired their gripes). Note that the remarks in
quotations are actually my paraphrases of my interpretations of what
was said, so it may stray mildly or wildly from what was actually said
or intended.

John Riesly, owner of Numbers, a Taylor 42, said ``What does it take
to win under this rule, a new boat every year? Damnit, I'm not
ready to buy a new boat.... There seems to be annual, major change in
the VPP which just shift the bias of the rule without improving it's
accuracy.''

To underscore this point, one of the crew of Full Cry (last year's
winner) was overheard as saying ``Not bad for a year old boat'' after
placing 2nd and 5th on the first day!

Jack King, owner of Merrythought, said ``I like my boat, and I'm not
ready to buy a new one. I campaign it as competitively as anybody,
but I can't win under this rule. Racer/cruiser division is all well
and good, and I entered it, but there were only two other entrants, so
there was no division. I don't want to go to PHRF, but I'm thinking
seriously about it.'' I happened to be standing behind him on Friday
when he was looking over the results---they ended up 5th, and he wasn't
pleased.

Fred Pipen, owner of V-Max, a Taylor 40, said ``Racer/cruiser
divisions are all well and good, but what about boats like mine which
are no longer competitive under the GP rule, which don't qualify as
racer/cruisers? If IMS is going to be the rule of choice, who's going
to buy my boat?''

Throughout the discussion, I had two thoughts. First, a major problem
with IMS, from an average competitors standpoint is that it's likely
that your particular boat may {\em never} win a race under the rule.
The nice thing about single number systems (be it rating systems like
PHRF, or even measurement systems like IOR) is that every dog has its
day. Maybe some dogs have more days than others, but still, every
once in a while, if you sail a good race and the conditions are right,
you'll come home with the silver. IMS doesn't ``average'' the
performance in any way, so a boat which has unrated speed in one
condition may have it in all conditions.

The other thing that occurred to me, as hinted at by Bonds, was if the
designers want the IMS to survive, they'd better come up with ``the
goods''---they're the ones who are discovering niches of unrated
speed, and that's why the silly rule isn't working now. They should
share the developments with the IMS (of course, that's not in their
best interest).

Finally, here's the results:

Sounds like the class participants have a better sense of
sportsmanship than the committee. At least a better sense
of fun. Good thing they got straightened out. Now they
know this racing stuff is supposed to be serious.

I got a call from one of the Melges 24 owners yesterday who said
Key West was considered one of the most enjoyable regattas that
many of the Melges crews had had. Apparently, there were class
prizes for both pro and amateur boats. Basically, if a pro drove
a race, the boat was considered pro. It sounds (to me) as if the
Melges 24 class association is making a real effort to have
competition on the race course and fun be the goals. Apparently,
there was some consternation on the first day when before the start
of the first race, one of the M24s was capsized near the starting line.
However, it was simply one of the San Diego boats getting a halyard
back - lose a halyard? Just put everyone on the low side and have someone
walk out the mast. Must look strange, but it's supposed to be
quite effective.
