Cost really should not be an issue as I am not going to need a lot to do an
18 foot tri haul. ( I hope)
It is an infernal '70's green fiberglass and I would like to do a two tone
Dark Blue with white. What I need is something that will last (a few years),
can be applied by roller (by an amateur), and foremost looks great when done
(some shine would be nice). I will probably put a green bottom coat (that
way when I beach it and scrape off the paint on the bottom, seeing the green
fiberglass again wont look like crap).
So in your opinion what is the best primer, top coat, and bottom paint? I
should also preface this with it is a towed boat so it will not be sitting
in the water for long periods of time (except long weekends :) )
I would appreciate brand name and type of what you have seen used.
Thanks in advance,
John
John,
If I remember right, you boat in the California Delta. If your boat is
going to be trailered, you will have difficulty with many bottom paints.
They lose their effectiveness when removed from the water. You will have to
use either an ablative paint that sloughs (sp?) off as it is used or I
believe there are some new ones that are primarily used for go-fasts.
As far as the topsides, I have never done any painting on any of my boats.
Many people use either Imron or Awlgrip, but application of either is a very
complicated job and they are very expensive. I would suggest prowling
around some of the paint manufacturer's web sites and perhaps talking to
some of the local boat yards.
Blue Skies,
Dave
