just purchased 1953 Herters fiberglass fishing boat. I need info on
what kind of paint to use and application methods. Thinking of
camoflage for hunting also! Any tips and or URLS greatly appreciated.

We keep the Caper painted (the boat on our Web site Tides and Currents
page). We use Interlux Brightside - though I think Easypoxy is just as
good. We have listened to the Interthane tape twice and both times took
the product back to the store.
Some Tips:
1. Preparation is the main thing. Sand and sasnd some more
then wipe down with brushing liquid (333) with a rag in one hand then
paint with the other hand.
2. Thin the paint as suggested in the directions.
3. Use the expensive masking tape for straight lines that don't
bleed.
4. Keep your brush clean except for the tip
5. Use the same brand of primer as you do paint
6. Expect a long total curing time - dry to the touch is pretty
fast though.
7. The expensive sand paper is far more economical than the
cheap stuff (we can use a whole roll - I think that is 30 sheets -
around the Caper, but it takes only about 5 of the $1.50 a sheet
circles to make a trip around on the random orbital sander.)
Interlux does have a paint guide on their site, but I am not
sure of the URL.

Please bear in mind if your fiberglass boat has been previously painted,
or has never been painted at all, or the type of water you're in, will
determine your choice of bottom paint. Inter-lux, Woolsley, Devoe, and
Ameron are all good choices.

I have also used Brightsides by Interlux with excellent results. It
is very important to use the entire painting system. That would
include the primers, wiping liquids, etc. Contact interlux for a
booklet on painting a fiberglass boat. I even tried Brightsides for
below the water line on a boat that I trailered and didn't have any
problems.
I painter a boat with the 2 part Interthane by Interlux and found it
to be extremely sensitive to humidity in the air. To make a long
story short, I lost the whole finish job because of the sensitivity
to humidity and had to start over again. I've used Brightsides ever
since.

Much braver than the Caper crew. We have bought the Interthane twice
and after listening to their tape of directions have "chickened out".

The Interthane Plus is really very easy to use. It goes on very nicely
with a foam roller (use the yellow ones from West). My topsides looks
like it came from the factory. I have touched up a few spots (including
one large area. . . don't ask), and it looks great. I swear by the stuff.
Just pay close attention to the instructions, mix it properly, apply it
in small enough amounts that it doesn't kick (but take your time and do it
right), don't roll over it too many times, and wear a very good mask (the
stuff is noxious as hell). Much much better than the one part paints.
BTW, anyone ever painted the inside of a boat with Interthane? What
breathing apparatus did you use?

Say Mark, What were the weather conditions when you used Interthane.
I painted the hull of my boat with it and by the end of the day the
boat look great! The paint was dry to the touch and I thought that
I had a pretty nice job. That night, we had a heavy fog. The next
morning, the finish had the texture of foam rubber. It looked as if
the paint had formed some kind of gas bubbles. Interlux warns about
the sensitivity to humidity.
