I have my boat insured with West Marine and i had a claim this past month. I
had my marina look at and estimate the repairs. I called the insurance company
and the claims adjuster did not want to know what the cost estimate was.
Instead he wanted me to exlpain the damage and then he would tell me how much
the repairs would cost. Well no need to say that the repair estimate he came up
with was a $1000.00 lower than the estimate by my marina. After several phone
calls back and forth along with the possibilty of a law suit the claims
adjuster again with out looking at the damage to the boat or even looking at
the marinas estimate recalculated the estimate and now he comes up with $200
more than the marina wants to repair the boat. IS THIS CRAZY OR WHAT. My
question is. Is this standard for boat insurance companys and has anyone else
ever had a problem with this insuance company? Now that it is all said and
done I am thinking i should not insure with this company.

Take the $200 over the repair cost and don't walk, RUN to a reputable
ins. co.
I am insured thru ITT Hartford (AARP as an add on). It cost me $272 a
year for STATED value insurance - this is on a 1998 Bayliner 1804 (Fish
& Ski), 120 Force engine and trailer. I had a claim last year - I lost
an argument with a submerged 12 x 12 while running at 35 - 40 mph. The
adjuster was out 2 days later. He wanted a tear down first, then Oked a
NEW lower unit for the engine, and reconditioning the prop (one ding in
one blade). This was done within 7 days after the tear down. No
problems, no hassles, no increase in premium.
I would talk to your homeowner's/auto insurance co. and see what they
can do for you. If you are 50 or over, spend the $8 a year for AARP
membership and get it thru them. My wife and I saved about $1500 a year
(total) for 2 new vehicles, homeowners and a $1,000,000 umbrella
policy. One fringe benefit to AARP - As long as you have a valid
driver's license they WILL NEVER CANCEL OR DROP YOUR INSURANCE.
Just my $0.02 worth. Good Luck.

If you join the Power Squadron and get your boat insurance from St. Paul Fire &
Marine through USPS, your premium will be reduced 2 1/2% for every advanced
grade or elective course you take.

West Marine's carrier IS St. Paul. I had a very good experience with them when a
boat I owned sank and I was paid a satisfactory amount for my loss in about 3 weeks
time.. And this when they were extremely busy after the last hurricane. Your
problem may be the adjuster who is a sub-contractor to the insurance co, although

That's interesting. I'll have to check and see whether there's any difference
between what they charge West and USPS, and whether they give any reduction in
premium for boating courses to the West customers.
