Why because they use tri-beam tranducers (with the option of WideSide
beam as an extra) which I believe do more than just look straight down.
Now I know that the display on the former is considerably narrower than
the latter, but given that they both use the same tranducer would I be
correct in thinking that the Optic shows exactly the same width of return
signal coverage / echo, albeit squeezed into a narrower screen display
than the Portrait ?
For Christmas last year, the family pitched in to get my dad a
humminbird wide 3d paramount.
Last week we finally got around to water testing it.
we were both a little disappointed with a couple of things....
for a start.
when using the 3d mode on a fast drift or troll,
the bottom profile appeared as consecutive grids.
this was not unexpected, but the definition of bottom contours
from depths varying from 15 to 100 feet was poor!
also in the 3d mode, the unit shows very few fish no matter what the depth is.
whereas the 2d mode showed fish all over the bottom.
we had some additional disappointments, but haven't put those into
postable text as of yet.

I am led to believe that Lowrance and Eagle come from the same
factory? I have no knowledge of Lowrance but I would not touch Eagle
with a very long fishing pole. The under warranty guarantee does not
exist.

I can't believe you said that. Did you deal direct with Eagle customer
service or let someone else handle warranty it for you?

I purchased the unit from a Marine Chandlery in Largs, Scotland. It
became faulty and I advised the company on the anniversary of the
purchase. They responded by saying that I advised them four days out
of warranty. Eagle UK declined to become involved since it was a
problem between the supplier and myself. I know when i advised the
supplier but I did it by phone and therefore have no proof.
I will therefore never ever buy from Eagle again since I received
absolutely no support from them.

Sandy,
Holding no particular brief for Eagle, but don't blame them totally. The
fault is with the chandlery and yourself. The chandlery because most
companies allow at least a month over the "end" of the warranty to allow
identification and processing of claims. Yourself because it is always best
to follow up a phone call with a fax/letter in such circumstances.
It is probably too late to follow this up now but Eagle may take this on out
of goodwill. You presumably have a bill of sale and correspondance with
Eagle to establish time of purchase and failure - if they see the chandler
as being unreasonable they make take action.
Or threaten to sue the chandler in the small claims court (if there is such
north of the border). It may well cost him more to defend the case than to
settle the claim or repair/replace the offending item. But be prepared to
loose too!

I wouldn't advise buying any. My wife insisted we needed one - we got
it and now she just gets totally frustrated as she can "see" the fish
that are not taking anything (even live bait)! :-)

Would that make her insensitive? There are times when I can agree she
is far too sensitive, but have yet to find the sensitivity setting
after 32 years of marriage.
Same here, except I shoot mine through the glass hull.
I used epoxy putty to form a dike around the transducer, then fill it with
water. As the water evaporates, I add more from a squeeze bottle. (If you're
one of those slobs with a bilge full of water, you won't have that probem... My
boat doesn't leak a drop- I won't tolerate it!)
I have mine " 3D Wide View " It is a peace
of "C......" . The screen is traping moisture,
resolution ,another four letter word.
Stay away from this product.
And to my shame this is a second
