Elgin has been made by West Bend and McCulloch, which both used Wico
and other coils. There's no easy answer without a model number.

He's got an email....go fer it!
Go to http://www.altavista.digital.com and put
+elgin +outboard
in the search box. The + makes it look for sites with BOTH words in
it so you don't end up with many Elgin, Ilinois boutiques. The
instructions on how to search altavista are on the site. It does,
also AMAZING TRANSLATIONS of the classic European languages in and out
of English! Try the translations...really neat.

If this is a Scott/McCulloch based Elgin try Sherwood Taylor @ 248-588-2625. His
business bought out the remaining inventory of Scott/McCulloch outboard parts
from "McCulloch Distributers" in Bullhead City AZ a few years back.
You must be able to tell him a model number for him to help.
Post the model number here and Marcus will let you know whether its a Scott or
West Bend.

There are actually two elgin motors. One has a serial # 711 3099 and
model # 571.58711. The other has a serial # 761.14648 and model #
571.58761. Can you also tell the year of manufacture from this info?

That's a 1955 7.5 HP made by West Bend.

That's a 1953 7.5 HP made by West Bend.

Apparently, yes :-)
West Bend's outboard line went through a series of buyouts eventually
ending up in Mercury's ownership under the Force by Mercury Marine
badge. Force has been making Sears Gamefisher motors since the late
1980s, and since Elgin was also a Sears brand, there's a chance that
Sears can still get the parts. You can also try a Merc/Force
dealer. One such dealer that has made a specialty of servicing all the
older brands somehow associated with Mercury or Force (Wizard, Sea
King, Elgin, West Bend, Chrysler) is my friends at OLDM...@aol.com
. Always include full brand, model, and serial number info with all
correspondence, and in addition, any numbers you can get off the old
parts you're replacing can be helpful.

Both of these motors take a Champion J11J plug set to 0.050"
gap. Breaker gap is .020".
Oil mix 16:1 TC-W3 and 89 octane unleaded.
If the model number begins with "571" it was produced by West Bend. "574", it
came from McColluch.
