I seriously doubt that Mercruiser would have hung an Alpha behind that
engine. Boat must have been re-powered? The 7.4 Mag will eventually chew
up the Alpha. A Bravo is a must with that level of torque.

That drive isn't beefy enough for the horsepower and torque you can get out

Don't do it if you intend to actually USE that horsepower.

I had that combo on my Donzi, as twins. Ran it 6 years with no
problems. A single installation would be harder on the drive, but the
biggest factor is the operator. If it's a cruiser, should have no
problems. If it's an offshore boat, be sure you know how to throttle
back coming out on waves.

Share what you know. Learn what you don't.
If you keep this, don't over-prop ( 21-23" pitch) to get more top-end speed.
Alphas are "speed" drives and all that torque through the powerband that the
7.4L cranks out can quickly fry your upper and.
I would also avoid using SS props on this. They don't flex like alum props and
the strain on your lower end can also cause premature failure.

Merc did pair the 7.4L ( 330 hp ) to an Alpha1 on
> some sport boats. And I say "sport boats", not cruiser class boats.
Sea Ray equipped 26 foot flybridge sedans with this package in the mid
80's (single engine). I also know a 1987 22' Donzi 2+3 that came from
the factory that way. I believe Merc stopped those packages when the
Bravo 1 came out in the late 80's. Bottom line: You can do it, but it's
not a very good idea, especially with a heavier boat.
I "thought" the 454 Mag/Alpha combo was always geared at 1.32:1 (and
used a special "supposedly" stronger gear set), I know mine were. Did
create some trouble finding good performance props at the required low
pitches, I ran Mach 4 blade 19".

I've seen Formula 242 LS models rigged that way. I heard, and
perhaps incorrectly, that the Bravo wasn't available yet, and Merc
only offered TRS drives at that time. Boat was probably a mid to
late 80s model. Is this correct?
