In their infinite wisdom one of my friends who used my boat
inadvertently turned off the breaker to my freezer and refrigerator
and, unfortunately the boat sat for almost a week in 90+ degrees heat
and all the bait in the freezer melted and rotted leaving me with an
incredible odor upon entering my boat today. Usually keep bait in the
bait freezer but that went on the fritz last week.

Whats the best way to get the odor out of the freezer and fridge?
So far I emptied and threw out the contents of the freezer and
refrigerator including two cases of Corona (ouch!), cleaned with a
bleach solution, let it sit for a while and then recleaned with Spray
nine. The smell is still present. Any tips on what else I could do?

P.S. One may find it funny to note that the brain surgeon who did this
is a real brain surgeon ......Go figure

Why isn't this the brain surgeon's problem?

Make a thick paste out of baking soda and water and scrub away. I'd be
surprised if that didn't take care of it.

Try making a paste of baking soda and spreading over the inside. Soda will
remove orders and covering the insides would make it closer to the oder
supplier.

That Baking soda is fine stuff for odors. After doing what Bill says... take
the rest of the box an open the lid and leave it in the fridge or bait freezer.
It will suck up the fish odors just the way it sits in the box. Change about
once a month in the summer

The smell is mostly amines, especially pyradine. Clean with
hydrochloric acid. You may need to soak some bits for a while, as the
acid may not penetrate as effectively as the bases did, and, as you have
discovered, the bases smell strong.

"To a kid with a hammer, everything looks like a nail." Beware of
letting brain surgeons deal with problems external to the brain. You
may never again realize that you have a problem.

Same thing happened to me with bait shrimp. Geez! I used bleach
solution, Dow bathroom cleaner (with scrubbing bubbles), some windex,
and finally sprayed it down with something called Smells Begone from
Amway. Aired the boat out daily for a couple of weeks and it was fine.
The baking soda ideas were good too. You might try Febreeze, although I
haven't personally tried it. It wasn't around when my shrimp went bad.
Good luck!

Hmm.....if you have access to one of those ozone air cleaners, that might work.
Heck, it does wonders on cars taking the tobacco smell out!!

The solutions the others posted may work. If they don't, you may have to face
the fact that the smell is into the insulation between the inner and outer
walls of the unit. If that's the case, I would say your friends should
contribute new units, because it's next to impossible to get this out (failure
of s $7.00 fan the day after I left for a week's vacation ended the life of a
$1500 Amana side-by-side).

It may be a good thing he is a brain surgeon because I have faced this same
problem on charter boats. And in the end no matter how many ways or times I
have tried I could not get the smell out of some fridges and had to replace
them. Time for the "brain surgeon" to pony up for a new freezer. Capt Bill

My rv camper fridge (freezer) has the same problem- think it got in to the gasket. We tried..bleach (straight) 1/2 Awesome and 1/2 frebreeze, hung a charcoal freezer thing in it.. smell was gone until we turned it back on... same smell, not quite as strong.... think I will try the pure vanilla in a bowl with newspaper wads, AND put coffee grounds in the gasket!!! (or take the gasket off and get new one would be easier)

There is a product called Pure Ayre that is excellent:

http://www.amazon.com/Odor-Eliminator-Your-Home-14/dp/B0011DTKY2

It contains enzymes that actually attack the odor as opposed to just
covering it up. Highly recommended, no connection to the vendor.

White vinegar works well to kill odors, including fish smell. It
doesn't just mask the smell. It actually attacks and neutralizes the
spores that cause the smell. Wipe down all the freezer and refrigerator
walls, shelves and gaskets with white vinegar. Then, put a small bowl
of vinegar in both the freezer and refrigerator (obvious the freezer
must be "off". Let it sit for 24 hours and then see if
you can still smell the fish.

Some experts recommend putting a slice of bread in the vinegar as well.
The bread increases the surface area of the vinegar in the bowl,
increasing it's efficiency.

We use vinegar water in a spray bottle to clean the fridge after every trip. Then the
doors stay open 'til next trip.

A box of baking soda stays in both freezer and fridge. No problems so far.

Keep the fish in a small cooler. It's cheaper to throw away.
