HI All,

Took a 1991 200 HP Mercury outboard to dealer today. The mecanic says
that Power Head need to be rebuild.
The motor has some problems with the over-heating and oil injection
alarms going ON (intermitent) and dificulties starting and some time
failing to start
after running for 1 hour.
Is the dealer-mecanic pulling my legs ? Cost could be around $3000.
They say.
How I know Power heads are bad ?
You help will be appreciated

If you don't think you can trust him on this, I think you need a
different dealer.

But if I was trying to verify it I would start with checking the
compression. How hard is it to pull a head and take a look?

Compression low, is usually the only way to tell. Another problem is a bad
bearing but this will cause load on the crank or piston and be hard to turn
the engine over.

Your overheat can be caused by carbs out of adjustment, thermostat bad,
water pump bad, oil injection not working properly (lean on oil).
Your oil horn can be caused by low oil, oil sensor, oil injection not
working properly.

Hard to start after warm would be a carb problem or fuel pump problem.

None of these symptoms indicate a blow powerhead.

Go to the dealer and ask him to verify to you that the engine is blown
before authorizing work to be done.

My guess it is not, and you need to find another service place.

Ditto.... blown would not be my first choice - get compression readings.
