Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a website that keeps track of the gas
prices that the marinas on Lake Lanier in Atlanta, GA charge? I have
seen prices as high as $2.45 / gal, when the street price is $1.31. I
figure there has to be a cheaper place somewhere.
Thanks
Ian

If you are getting gas for $1.31 a gallon, come to Texas, where we
do the refining...it's 1.55 here at the cheapest.

Lanier Harbor has always had the cheapest gas...Holiday has always been
the highest. Every other marina in between.

I keep my boat at Aqualand marina at Lake Lanier but I go down to Lanier
Harbor to fill up because their gas is cheaper. I just filled up there a
few days ago and the price was under $2.00. They also give you a .10 per
gallon discount if you are a Boat US member which I am.

Ian, I feel your pain. I had a slip on Lanier for about five years, and I
don't think I ever payed less than $1.89/gallon. I'm interested to know if
such a site exists, and if not, I'd be interested in helping create one.

I have smaller (and more fuel efficient) boats nowadays, so filling up on the
way to the water is preferred. I've noticed that Lake Hartwell seems to have
significantly less expensive gas at its marinas. I wonder if it's just a
matter of the ratio of non-trailerable to trailerable boats using the water.
The more captive the audience, the higher the price.

If you can find gas for $1.31, you're missing one hell of a business
opportunity. Would you like the name of a logistics broker who can send a
tank truck down your way within 24 hours?

Let's see, Costco in Morrow has Regular for 129.9.
Quick Trip on Upper Riverdale Rd in Riverdale is 128.9.

Problem in what you suggest is that when you transport is
across state lines for resale, that State wants their taxes.
Georgia currently has the lowest state tax on gas in the
nation. Unfortunately that is about to change.

Yeah, I know, I voted for Uncle Sonny, and I still think
he's better than Uncle Roy. For those who watch CNN, it was
not the flag. If you don't believe it, ask any teacher in
Georgia. If the teachers had not been almost 100% against
Uncle Roy, he would still be governor :)

Damn. I'm living in the wrong place (upstate NY). Regular is around 1.65
right now. And, bass season doesn't begin until mid-June. :-(

For some reason metro Atlanta has always had VERY low gas prices
compared the rest of the country. Perhaps because there are so many
"tank farms" there...therefore, lower transportation cost to deliver to
the dealers.

As previously mentioned, it's the very low state tax on gasoline.

Doug,

Don't feel too bad. While you're unable to boat due to snow and ice, you
can buy reasonable gas. Here in California, prices at the pump are between
2.06 and 2.23 for regular. Don't even ask what is on the water. However
the flip side is that we're out there enjoying the sun and burning that high
priced petrol. It was 80 here in Northern California yesterday.

Blue Skies,
Dave

I think it is just lower taxes. I am always a little surprised when I
travel out of the state and the prices just keep going up and up :-)

Thanks for all the input folks. I think I am going to create a website
to keep track of the marina gas prices on Lanier, maybe some other
information too, like pumpout prices etc. If anyone has any other
information you think we should track, let me know.

To bad thegeorgiaboater site is gone. I don't think it had gas prices at
marinas but it was a great site for finding mucho info on the lakes and
had a costal section as well.

If you start up site let me know. I keep my boat at Starboard, but since
I trailer it uasualy just get gas at the station in Flowerly Branch.

As far as "Any other suggestions" How about a brief rundown on places to
eat accessable by water. The "Up the Creek cafe" at Starboard has pretty
good fair. And is much eaiser to get to since thay added dockage
alongside the gas dock.

Lanier Harbor is good as well. But it has been awhile since we have been
there. I guess we will give it a try this year again.

Ian,
Check out http://lakesidenews.com/ The "Marinas Information" section
lists gas prices. While it isn't always current, you can get a good
idea about who has the best prices. It also has other good Lanier
info.
