I have a new 2000 90 hp Johnson outboard on a 16 1/2 foot Nitro 640, with a 19
pitch prop. My dealer says 5000 rpms is redline, but the Johnson brochure says
max rpm's is between 4500 and 5500. I have run it up to about 4800, but havn't
gone over. It is trimmed a little less than 3/4 of its range at 4800 rpm's.
My questions are: What is redline, and could this motor possibly push a 21
pitch prop near or above 5000 rpm's? The first question is most important,
because if it is indeed 5500 rpms, then I think the 19 pitch is perfect. I'd
like to be set up for max top speed. Btw, it is an aluminum prop, as I cannot
afford a stainless prop until next year.

Thanks in advance.

Take it up to 5500, your dealer is wrong.

Thanks, Dave! I'll see what she'll do.
