Anyone know of web site giving the dealer cost of such items. This would
come in handy for negotiating fair price. Marine Electronic dealer cost
list this sounds great. If you know of one send info. Thanks

I don't know of a site to find dealer cost on electronics.
I can tell you, your local dealer is not making much on them.
Electronics are one area that I find it very hard to make a profit on.
I usually make more profit on installing electronics than from actually
selling them.
If I can make 15% mark up, I'm lucky.
The company that I buy from, buys factory direct at the best price possible
(West Marine can't buy as cheap as he does), he marks them up 5% to sell
to me, and I mark them up about 15%, but I rarely get the full 15%.

I have the good fortune of having a supplier that helps me to compete with
the large discount chains, but most dealers aren't that lucky.
Even if you have to pay a little more, please support your local businesses,
they
are the one who will be there to help if you need it.

I know better than to get baited into these kind of discussions, but I feel
very strongly about the subject.

I am usually willing to pay 10-15% mark-up on stuff I buy. But, it is those
1% of businesses who try to peddle cheapo crap to a customer saying it is
top o the line stuff. If I can do research on a product I buy before I plunk
down my hardly earned mo ney I like to. If I can find out what the dealer
payed for the product then I am willing to pay a "fair" price for it.

If you are worried about a dealer ripping you off, go to another dealer. I
never understand why someone who thinks they are being ripped off, deal with
the people they think are ripping them off. You make it impossible for
yourself to a satisfied customer, when you think you are being ripped off.
There are enough resources on the internet for you to find out what the selling
price is for a paticular model. When you find out what the selling prices are
for the model you are looking at then you can decide if the dealer price is a
fair price or not. How much the dealer pays for anything never comes in to the
equation.

Sometimes you don't realize you are ripped off until after it is too
late...I have started to use the internet to check prices but as the initial
poster wanted was someplace to check marine electronic prices, dealer prices
or customer prices would probably suffice.

might be availble for electronics .Total electronics packages can exceed
the cost a new car easly. Premiun electronics packages anyway.

I would also agree with another poster that you would be best served
in the long run by dealing with a local dealer. He may charge
slightly more than the biggest discount chains, but when you need
help, that small price difference is insignificant.

Yes, sometimes it pays to pay a little more from a local dealer. IF, it is
something highly sophisticated, and you have no clue how to take the thing out
to send it back to the manufacturer for repair. There are a lot of boaters in
this situatuation, who don't know which end of a screwdriver or wrench to use!!
For me, I buy at the best price I can find, either at dealer cost, or the next
best. If I ever need service, rather than paying $85/hr. for a technician, I
remove the item and ship it to the factory for repair, just like most shops
would do, and pay the same rate for repairs that the dealer would!
As far as prices, what I always do is check the price of West & BOAT/US. I buy
most everything from them, because they have about the best price going, and
their markup is low on electronics. Now with other material, you can sometimes
find it cheaper, or at least I can with the availability to get things
wholesale.

As with most anything, it comes down to are you a do-it-yourselfer or do you
want to have a technician work for you. The choice is up to the individual!!
