After I returned to my slip after eight or so hours on the waters of
Lake Washington yesterday I noticed my wallet was missing. Bummer.
First time in my 41 years...

So seriously, does anyone have empirical evidence of the floating
properties of a nylon wallet with the usual contents of credit cards,
slips of paper, drivers license, a few quarters, and 1 dollar %-)?

I think I'd feel better if it took a quick dive to the bottom rather
than think it was floating around somewhere out there.

Sorry, there is usually *just* enough closed cell foam in the layers to
keep it afloat (at least my old one did). If you got a *really* cheap
wallet with no padding at all, it probably did sink.

Here's to being cheap ;-)

After thorough and scientific study I can incontrovertably state the following:

1. Non-boat owners' wallets sink faster than boat owners'. This observation was
explained by the lighter weight and thinner profile of boat owners' wallets.

2. Nylon sinks. This was verified when a young lady who I was instructing on the
finer points of sailing lost her nylons overboard.

3. Dollar bills go into the water and are never seen again. However, there
is some uncertainty due to the fact that most of the
respondents indicated that they always put them into their boats before
they disappear into the water. If you send me a large number of bills
(higher denominations preferred), I will tell you if they float.

4. No boat owners had credit cards which they felt would be appropriate for a
float test. A number indicated that their spouses had taken them all and
gone shopping, causing them to lose a substantial amount of their capacity.

Tom, full wallets sink, empty wallets float. If you want to find your wallet
overboard, always take an empty wallet;-). I lost my wallet and tools several
years ago and now leave a few bucks in the car with my drivers license and
marina entry card. I tie down the sea bag and boom box and Igloo. Some Grouper
is livin' it up in Acapulco on my crdit cards!! Julian of the Sea

I lost a nylon wallet back in, oh around 1980 while canoeing. FIVE YEARS later a
guy was swimming and found it. I had moved, so none of the license info was valid,
so he looked up the last name in the phone book, found my parents and mailed it
to them ! All money was still in the wallet, well actually the remains of the money
was in the wallet (very little left of the bills :-<) Kinda restored my faith in
fellow man for a little while there....but it did sink and did not biodegrade :-O
