Fond du Lac, WI - Mercury Racing is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the
Mercury SST 120 race outboard with a history making 'SST 120 10th
Anniversary National Championship' race in conjunction with the 2000
American Power Boat Association (APBA) Outboard Performance Craft (OPC)
Nationals. The APBA OPC Nationals, known as the "Indy 500" of powerboat
racing, take place Labor Day weekend, September 1-4, on the Kankakee River
in Kankakee, Illinois. The SST 120 is the feature class of the 2000 APBA
OPC Nationals.

Racers competing for the 'SST 120 10th Anniversary National Championship'
title will be given one shot to make history, placing their name in the
record books as the SST 120 10th Anniversary Champion. As part of the
anniversary celebration, Mercury Racing is providing each driver who
qualifies for the final 'SST 120 10th Anniversary National Championship'
race with a custom Mercury Racing/SST 120 10th Anniversary jacket. In
addition, the winner of the event will receive a leather Mercury Racing
bomber jacket featuring a custom full-back 'SST 120 10th Anniversary
National Champion' logo. All jackets supplied include custom embroidery of
the driver's first name. Mercury Racing is also offering a contingency purse
awarded to the top-three finishers as follows:

1st Place $500
2nd Place $300
3rd Place $200

Drivers must display custom 'Mercury Racing/SST 120 10th Anniversary
National Championship' decals on their boat to qualify for the custom
jackets and prize purse.

Worldwide publicity, international exposure and notoriety generated by
Mercury Racing awaits the winner of this one-time event.

The Mercury SST 120 race outboard powered the first SST 120 National
Champion at the 1990 APBA OPC Nationals in Kankakee. The engine, developed
for APBA's Super Stock Tunnel (SST) class raced within the OPC category, has
set numerous endurance and speed records worldwide since its 1990 debut. The
engine has also set a record for the longest consecutive production run of
any OPC race engine. SST 120 racers are supported on-site by Mercury Racing
support trucks and personnel at national race events throughout North
America. Mercury Marine continues to be the only marine engine manufacturer
to support racers on-site with factory support trucks and personnel.

Previous SST 120 National Champions include:

1990 Jerold Wienandt, Fox Point, WI
1991 Jack Withrow, St. Petersburg, FL
1992 Michael Makus, Oshkosh, WI
1993 Todd Bowden, Monrovia, CA
1994 Tracy Hawkins, Spring, TX
1995 Alden Thornton, Harbinger, NC
1996 Alden Thornton, Harbinger, NC
1997 J. R. Saffold, Tampa, FL
1998 Gary A. Pugh, Knoxville, TN
1999 Chris Fairchild, North Aurora, IL

OPC racing features a variety of crafts from small 35 h.p. mini tunnel boats
to 150 h.p. V-bottoms and 340+ h.p. unlimited tunnels. SST 120 is the
largest and most competitive OPC class. The class features 16-foot boats
powered by the 2.0 Liter (122 cubic inch) Mercury SST 120 race outboard.
The engine features 122 cubic inches of carbureted V-6 power mounted to a
race
center section and gearcase. The powerhead sports a lightweight aluminum
flywheel
and racing carburetors for unmatched performance. SST 120 tunnel race boats
are capable
of reaching speeds up to 110 mph and pulling up to 4 G-forces as drivers
maneuver around
multiple hairpin turns on a challenging 1-¼ mile course.

The SST 120 race outboard will also be featured in the 'Union International
Motonautique (UIM) World Millennium Championship' race at the 2000 OPC
Nationals, a separate event from the 'SST 120 10th Anniversary National
Championship' event.

actually St Louis is the "indy 500" of powerboat racing, Kankakee is more like
the "baja 150"

Actually the 120 class of the 80's was a different motor and it evolved into the 140 class. Then in
1990 the current 120 motor and class was established. So technically Rick is right. Just as the
current Champ class bears little resemblance to the old 2 liter champ class. Thanks for Mercury
helping out, and promoting OPC. Hey Rick now do I get a decal?... :) Jeff (no shame)

might be a different block but it was still 120...where do you think Brett May,
Mike Seebold, Buck Thornton, Lee Sutter, all those guys used to bash
heads...Ben R, Steve R, all of em...Joe Burgess lost his life in a 120 boat
testing for St Louis in 82..

true...guess that's why they call it F1 now..

somehow GG got it copyrighted "as pertaining to boats", which still makes me
wonder about how that would hold up in court...seems sort of vague to me..

I agree. Who is to know what form of "F1" someone is talking about when
hearing it on the street. FIA F1 was around loooong before GG was even born.
GG's copyright must have some sort of further definition regarding the
term...

GG has it copyrighted here as used in powerboat racing. I'll be there.

Actually he has the names Formula 1, F1, and F2. Some of which pertain to designs such as a logo and
some as to the name as used in a sporting event etc. Some of which he bought from the old Formula 1
association in bankruptcy court and later amended. Quite an interesting subject. But as since no one
has challenged him it will stand.

Actually as far as I can find under his name he only has the names "Formula
One" and "Formula Two" as registered for powerboat racing and shirts etc.

There are many "F1"s and several "Formula 1"s but non registered to him.

AOF has a club in Alabama called, Alabama Power Boat Association. They were
using the initials, APBA. We were having a lot of fun with this, as it was
AOF's APBA!. This club held AOF nationals in Rainbow City, AL in 97 and 98 and
had all kinds of people joining their club more as a light hearted joke than
anything, as people wanted the APBA AOF cards! However, one day both the club
and myselft got a phone call asking them from refraining from using those
initials in connection with boat racing.. This club has since changed their
name to Alabama Powerboat (One word) and using the intials, APA. This meant a
lot of paperwork in the state of Alabama to change their name, and was a real
inconvenience. I guess Big Brother went a little too far?

Looks like someone else has APBA registered as a trademark for a couple of
things. Neither related to boating.
