Nice list! The only problem is that the Saint Louis race debuted well before
1980. How about the previous winners?

there was a bunch of other classes run including Sport E, Formula-two,
Formula-100 and SST-120 over the years with many many different winners, some
of the best racing ever came from the smaller classes.

They give out an award every year called the Joe Burgess award which is for the
outstanding driver of the year. It's named after a Mod-VP driver who was a
real standout in the late 70's and early 80's. He tried his first ride in a
tunnel boat, a david Lee designed sst-120 boat and blew over on the front
straight during testing on friday. My father was lucky enough to be the first
driver awarded with this trophy and he considers it the high point of his
racing career.

I don't think Joe Burgess ever ran MOD VP. He was superb in true Vee Bottom
racing. ie: FJ

you would be incorrect my prune picking amigo...Joe ran Roark Summerford's
Laser V bottom all year in the NPA ( National Powerboat Assn ) all year and won
most of the races from what I remember. He for certain ran Mod-VP....

I remember the Mod-VP race that weekend after he had lost his life and Roark
decided to drive the boat himself, he drove his ASS off trying to catch Kim
Howard ( I think ) only to barrell roll in what is now turn one...was really
heart wrenching watching him trying to win it for Joe...whoever wins the Joe
Burgess award should know all that went into naming that award after him, that
was one tough weekend for everybody..

You want me to say I was WRONG??? OK, I guess, I appear to have errored in the are
of Joe Burgess and MY MOD VP class!!! Was Kim driving the black Sleek Craft????

I accept your admission of error Ron, it's easy to make that mistake since
Mod-VP was only three years old at the time and V bottoms ran with modified
V-bottoms, hence the name...

Kim Howard was in a black sleek craft with red/orange/yellow california lookin
stripes on it...Roark gave it a valian effort and almost pulled off the outside
pass but got juked up in somebody's wake and rolled it, I remember the crowd
making a big WHOA noise almost as big as when:

1. Tim blew over into the trees
2. Billy barrell rolled after hitting Chris Bush.

Was Kim using a Hill prop?? kewl

My better half was pitting for him that weekend, and pushed him off the
dock....I wasn't there but he's told me about it - they were good friends.

Even to this day he gets serious jitters when anyone hops right from a slower
boat into a fast one (or vise-versa) ie: Schubert, EJ etc

I meant 'He was who gave Joe's boat the shove from the dock when he made that
last run --"

He was just a youngster then -- devastated him, from what I understand.

I remember it being the last run of the day and then referee Tom Stickle gave
Joe the go ahead to make a few laps in the new boat...then he crashed...i was
on the launch ramp and heard the engine whine out as he left the water, next
thing i know they are doing CPR on him as they go by from then on it got
worse...Joe was a great driver and a real loss to the sport, whoever gets the
Joe Burgess award has received a significant honor and I hope they realise
that...

Mike won 6 times, 7 if you count when he was DQ'd for being *one* lb light.

I think Felix counts that one as a win, if mike had not 1. taken a dump before
the race or 2. taken two checkered flag laps..he would have been legal, ironic
huh

I was busy trying to fix Chris's boat and then trying to get it up the ramp
and back to the trailer.

The fun part was when the sheriff's department and state patrol had to
escort us to the airport and the hauler to the north side of St. Louis.

I saw for the first time how truly ugly beer can make people. I was hit by
no less than a half a dozen beer cans as we took the awning down off the
trailer. I was threatened repeatedly by the Bud Light people that were
there will Bill, Mike and Billy.

As to Mike (Snow Nose we called him). How F-ing stupid can one be to try
and punch someone in the face that is wearing a full face helmet?
Especially, when YOU have worn one before. I figured out that day that
while Bill is a pretty nice guy, Mike has a brain so small that you'd need
watch tools to work on it.

Think I'm a little bitter? Well, I really don't take to being threatened
with knives and guns. Oh, that is the reason for the escort. While the
sheriff's department saw the threats, they decided the best thing was to
just get us out of town as quickly as possible rather than embarrass A-B
with any problems.

I was sitting around the ramp when that happened, and we had the same question.

Chris is lucky he had that full face Arai on tight that day...not sure what all
Mike was thinking there, part of it was frustration I'm sure...remember he was
sitting out a year for his personal problems...only added to it from what I
remember...I still say Chris should race F1 again..

Wait.. I clearly remember the reason for the upheaval....

Coming out of the pavillion turn, Bill was on the outside and Chris on the
inside...Chris went SO wide that Bill was nearly forced into the trees.

Now...some say "Chris' boat just didn't take a set"....but all the crowd picked
up on what was really going on --- and THAT's why he got pelted with a thousand
beer cans, as well as having a police escort.

(there was a guy next to me with a broken beer BOTTLE -- thank GOD somebody
grabbed him and dragged him off, cuz he was headed straight for Bushie!)

While it IS very dumb to punch somebody who is wearing a helmet, it's equally
as dumb to try and wipe-out the home town hero.

I've had the personal experience of being pushed by Bush when he drove
Gilbreaths Mod-C at Parker --he tried to run me into a shallow area of rocks
that we were warned to stay away from at drivers' meeting. He was looking
straight at me the whole time - face-shield to face-shield.....(my boat was
built like a tank, so I didnt back off but he was faster, and slowly pulled
away from me)
There was no reason for that --as I was certainly no threat. But in the end, I
still finished ahead of him -cuz he was upside down in the corner only 2 laps
later.

>Wait.. I clearly remember the reason for the upheaval....

Close but no cigar...they had been goin back and forth for lap after lap...Bill
swung way wide to make as straight a line as possible going thru turn 4 ( in
front of the crowd )...Chris was turning off of turn 3 hard and squaring the
corners off...Bill came into the corner about a lane and an inch off the bouy,
Chris, Having Overlap, stick his boat in there as well, as they passed the bouy
and started to set up for the turn, Chris popped the nose of his boat, set it
again to straighten it out, then popped it up again to go thru a roostertail...

Mr Bill, driving off of Chris' initial set turned with him ( being the great
driver he is ) not expecting Chris to come over one more lane, when Chris did
he and Mr. Bill touched and Mr. Bill rolled over to the right, in front of the
angry crowd. I have it all on tape...and clearly one of the craziest moments
in boat racing history...but it was a legal move...

You just had two of the greatest tunnel boat drivers ever, who dont really like
each other, going after the biggest race of the year like pit bulls, you
couldnt have asked for better circumstances...too bad Gillman hit Bush on a
restart and forced him out...Gillman ended up winning after four restarts and
DeSouza running out of Gas...I think Kevin Miller lead one time too...it was
crazy... and in the end it started to rain..

In Chris' defense he was racing for a win and Billy should have expected
something goofy..
I
>still finished ahead of him -cuz he was >upside down in the corner only 2 laps

but still faster and more of a threat on the race course than you...haha
