Does anyone ever talk about Limited Inboard Hydroplane Racing on this
newsgroup?

I grew up in the pits and am interested in getting back into the
scene. Haven't been around since father got out around 1990.

Also, if this is the right newsgroup, what is the state of APBA Inboard health?
What classes are thriving?? Please say 6 litre :-)

Tried the skydiving thing for about 7 years now. Ready for a change.

Chris

Terminal doesn't mean the end.....
It's only the beginning.

Saw your note about the limited inboard hydros, Yes that group is alive and
doing quite well. Probably the now I would say the 5L class is the largest
category in that division, but a lot depends too on where you live if racing
is what you want to do. The limited inboard category now has a part time
coordinator, Mark Weber, who sort of keeps a handle on things and steers
people in the write direction. The limited division now has a high point
fund, (about $40,000) there are a few bucks in this fund, but when you
divide the money up between the classes it isn't that much. Give me a email
note at home with were you live (city & state) and I will try to give you a
couple people in your area you might contact. The limited APBA web page is a
good source too for info about our category. They do talk about Off Shore
and Tunnel boats on this NG because I think they have a lot of problems.
(kidding) Good luck, Dave

I cannot speak to the specific classes but I can tell you that Inboard is
currently the second largest Category in APBA with over 500 racing members,
right behind Offshore so it sure seems healthy. It is still an incredibly
exciting category! Good uck.

wow!
Did not know Offshore was that healthy!
Back when I was invovled, offshore (to me) was a 'other thing' that we didn't
follow or discuss much. Though hydros (inboard or outboard) were the only
thing that existed!

Are there really more offshore racers thanoutboard hydros? A-stock, B-stock,
etc.....

Great to hear!

Sadly, Inboard Hydro's have all but died and disappeared here in the south.
We used to have some of the biggest attended races here (Miami and the
Southland Regatta in St. Pete.) years ago. I have some great Video of young
Jim Kropfeld, Tom D'eth and Mike Mammano driving 5 and 7 litre's in St.
Pete. Watching a Good 5 and 7 L. Hydro race sometimes is as exciting and
intense as a good PROP Formula one race. I miss that alot!
Welcome to the Group!!
Mike A. brings up a good point, can anyone post the current category member
stat's online here?

Inboard Hydros need a new class.....Honda powered....unlimited look a like ...A
ton of Inboard members are not racers (drivers) they are owners and supporters
of APBA... The number of wet boats don't match the number of members. I'm not
disagreeing with Mike A.... I'm adding to his statement of 500 members...

Hi Ron -- just wanted to ask what type and model "exactly" is the one you have.
It's a Sony, right?
I just used a Sony digital that also made short videos onto disk --- but I
didn't like it at all. Looked just like the one you have, except for the
movie-making thing. But it took at least 1.5 seconds for it to respond to a
click -- worthless for boatracing photography. The viewfinder was all jerky
and delayed.

When we buy one, we want to make sure we get *THE* one you have. Let me know
which.

Thanks a bunch

Ron,

I think I drove that 225 inboard you are talking about for Jim Edwards after
he purchased it from Woods. The last I heard the boat was destroyed in a
auto/trailer accident in NY state. Edwards is dead now but maybe his grand
sons, Mark Weber or Mike Weber have some footage of the boat. Yes it was
very fast, but the aluminum block Buick V8 had a lot to do with that too.

I second that motion for "Classic Boat Racing" on speedvision.
Mike S., If you really want to see a ratings boost this is the way to do it
I perceive. Here in Florida I am ALWAYS running into old timers (70+ years
old) that used to race outboard and inboard and still attend some races. As
soon as you start talking C service or old Unlimited's you can really see a
twinkle start erupting in their eye's! I think Tom D'eth could probably get
you some great footage as he heads up an Antique racing club. I can get you
his # if you need it.
I also know where there is some good 1987 Kilo footage. Includes
Lauterbach's last hurrah through the traps in a 5 litre at 140+mph. I doubt
we want to show that though as you can hear his body hit the water louder
than the boat.
I was there, a very scary thing to see a boat fly higher than a nearby
bridge. It was a very sad day. We lost another legend there. Lowell
schumacher blew over a laydown 250 and broke his back that day too.
Kilo's are cool but VERY dangerous...
