Finally getting my beans together here on race reports (too damned hot to
work on the truck) and here's SOA Capitol Lake. These get posted to
goracing.com as well, and starting with this report I'm sending pictures
with goracing reports. the photo sent with this report was of Jon Steen
blowing around Dave Anderson in turn two. The reports should be up
soon...Enjoy the pix.

KYLE BAHL, J. MICHAEL KELLY, BOB WARTINGER BIG WINNERS ON CAPITOL LAKE
CHEYNEY STREET HURT IN FLIP

***************************************************************
Capitol Lake, located just below the State Capitol dome in Olympia,
Washington provided the setting for great racing and a couple good scares
for folks attending the annual Capitol Lakefair. The course was enlarged to
a closely approximated mile as a test for a proposed surveyed course.
Weather was overcast, with occasionally gusty winds but no rain.

Kyle Bahl, of Lynnwood, WA., won two classes for young outboard drivers
during the first day of racing at the Capital Lakefair Regatta, and another
on Sunday. Bahl was first in the Junior Runabout and J Pro Hydroplane
classes.

J. Michael Kelly, of Kent, won both the A Stock Hydro and A Stock Runabout
classes both days and added a 25ss hydro victory on Sunday.

Veteran Bob Wartinger, of Seattle, was first both days in OSY 400 Hydro and
C Stock Hydro.

Cheyney Street, of Edmonds, WA, was injured saturday in the D Modified
Hydro class when the right side afterplane non-trip blew out in turn 2,
causing his boat to spin violently to the left into a scary cartwheel.
Cheyney, usually the picture of animation, gave no signal...appeared to be
seriously hurt and was quickly picked up by rescue and was taken to St.
Peter's hospital, in Olympia, where he was treated for an injury to his
right eye. He was released later in the day and was soon back in the pits
trading jokes and nursing a huge headache.

Apparently not satisfied with saturday's thrill show, the first D Modified
heat Sunday was halted by a crash as well, when Dale Bartley's hydroplane
hooked and was struck by Salem Oregon's Mark Allen. Both boats were
severely damaged, Bartley's beyond repair, though neither driver was
injured. Bartley, From Olympia, balanced his misfortune with a win in 20ss
Hydro.

Jon Duvernet Steen appears to be primed to repeat his 1997 D-Stock Hydro
national championship, Winning easily both days driving his Motul sponsored
hydroplane.

Other winners were: Junior Hydro, Kyle Hannon; 20SS Hydro, Bart Loveric;
Formula A Hydro, Kay Myers; D Mod Hydro, Lee Badger; C Stock Runabout, Buzz
Bannister; Restricted B Hydro, Les "Butch" Morgan; C Mod Hydro, Lee Tietze;
Antique C Service Runabout, Dave Losvar, and Classic B Stock Runabout,
Darold Nyberg.
