Well, I would think that if you used a latex base paint, it
should last a looong time. Where it will last is up to you.
Bits on your racks, bits on the rocks, bits on a shell beach,
streaks on the pavement, flecks on your car....

What's wrong with yum yum yellow? :-)

I would have to think that one reason for painting a boat would be that it
was purloined....unless yellow contrasts hideously with your other gear.
However, it would defintely not enhance the resale value.

I can think of another reason, though it wouldn't apply to a plastic
sea kayak. The boat I repainted is royalex, white water canoe -
royalex, as you probably already know, consists of foam sandwiched
between two layers of ABS plastic with layers of vinyl over that as
"sun screen" for the UV sensitive ABS. As my boat splits it's time
between roasting in the sun on top of the truck and scraping the vinyl
of off it's hull on rocks in the river, I decided it might be prudent
to cover some of that ABS up with a fresh coat of royalex paint
(basically spray on vinyl, Mad River and Dagger sell it). Also, _red_
goes much better with my gear and shows up better in pictures than the
old sky-blue ever did :)

But as for a plastic sea kayak, it is probably made of polyethylene
and the only polyethylene boats I've seen painted were to cover up
repairs. I believe they used some kind of automotive paint (???).
You might try contacting your boat's manufacturer for advice...

Not much help -
