I was considering purchasing a Pyranha Blade until a local dealer told me
he discontinued selling them because purchasers were returning them and the
manufacturer's warranty was worthless. Anyone who owns one care to
comment? Please reply to newsgroup.

Cindy,

I haven't seen much breakage of Pyranha boats. Yeah, some do break.
The ones I have seen broken were hammered pretty hard. The warranty
is now a pro-rated deal where you get a new hull at a cost dependent
on the age of the boat. I think it is pro-rated over three years. I
don't know how well they honor the new warranty since no one I know
has broken one since the new warranty has been in place.

The Blade is a great design and we have a local dealer (Starrk Moon)
that has excellent prices. I think I would buy one even if they
offered no warranty at all. It seems pretty tough to me any way.
If I break it I will buy a new one if I have to.

BTW if warranty is a major concern of yours I have found New Wave
to really stand behind their boats. The Strobe looks like a nice
boat too.

If my understanding of the current Pyranha warranty is incorrect
someone please correct me.

Pyranha reworked their warranty and now makes their boats a wee bit
heavier for greater durability. They are using Metalacene plastic which
all the engineer dudes say rules. I think they have had only one boat
break of all those sent out under new specs [since last Nov.]. I have
heard of no one returning Blades. I feel good about their warranty.

Tell that to a friend who has broken three or four Dagger boats in two
years I've known him. He's now had his Acrobat270 over a year, and it's
still going strong.

Who was the local dealer? Mountain State Kayaks told me the same thing.
Then I went to Starrk-Moon and got strightened out. Just have them pop
in the video of the guys paddling the Blades and Micros and you tell me
if you would paddle the boat. These are loca guys and gals even. They
look to me like they are ounishing the hell out of those boats and the
people at the shop say they have had no problems at all. If I were you I
would trust a guy paddling the boats he sells over the big drops. just
my opinion.

Cindy,

FWIW, I've owned several Acrobats and the '97 hull plastic is a big
improvement. I'm a big guy (200+ lbs) and I've taken a number of hard rock
hits this season- the hull has held up very well. Three of my friends
have Blades, paddle 'em hard and love 'em. It's a hot looking and
performing boat and so far it seems durable.

I can't comment on the current warranty (we haven't needed to use it) but
I have found the IMPEX folks helpful.

If you're in any doubt about the quality of Pyranha Kayaks, nip over to the
U.K. and ask paddlers here what the general consensus is...we've been using
them longer.

Alternately, a quicker and cheaper option....look at uk.rec.boats.paddle and
see how many people are singing the praises of Pyranha boats there (clue: very
few indeed).

For what it's worth, my own Pyranha horror story concerns a Mountain Bat which
split in the hull and sank.....on a flat section of a river. I suffered
embarrassment and a mile long carry-out. Pyranha did a repair on the (huge)
crack which lasted a week. To be fair, Pyranha claim their plastic is stronger
now than ever.

Cindy, I've owned a half dozen Pyranha's over the past 3 years. I
broke 2, both were 96's (last 2 digets of ID #). They warrantied the
first one free and I think they are going to warranty the 2nd (they were
both under a year old). I heard from a lot of people that they were
previously charging them cost of the hull, I think about $250 even
though the boat was under a year old. Stating the reason for not
honering free replacement in the first year because they hit rocks (Yea
right!). I'm told they have improved their plastic and have not seen a
97 brake. They do (have) drag their feet though. It took over 5 weeks
(then another three to get the boat) before they oked the warranty on my
1st boat and it's been about a month so far on my last boat. But, it
looks like they are "stepping up to the plate" and are standing behind
their product. I would imagine they would have to if they wanted to
sell any boats around here.

I paddle one as well as several of my friends. I've had no problems and
would recommend the boat.

Pyranha did have a problem with last year's boats: they were made lighter
than before and tend to wear out along the "v" in the center of the boat since
every rock hits the same spot. Replacements were apparently a problem due to
Importer costs and export timeliness. I understand some dealers got VERY
frustratrated. Perception had a few "bad batches" in the 80's, Dagger had a
seat-bolt problem in the RPM's, and Prijon shipped Rockets with flimsy cockpit
rims. It happens.
This year's plastic is new Metalicine (top grade stuff), the boats are
heavier, and the "v" is gone from the Razor, Blade, and new Micro 240. If you
have a break in last years boat that is't just worn thru (can you see thru the
hull when held up to sunlight?) talk to your dealer.
Unfortunately some dealers either dropped or lost the line and are
encouraging you away from the product they no longer sell. Pyranha boats are
tougher, heavier, and shaped better for abuse than ever before. I paddle them
exlusively for the last 5 years and have still broken more non-Pranha boats
than ours in the last 10. Anyone can break a boat, and any boat can be
broken. Check out our warranty, compare our designs, and pick the one that
best suits your needs. Good Luck!

They make it thicker = heavier = portage hell.

I gotta tell ya. I've only seen one pyranha boat crack. I have paddled
my micro for over a year and beat the hell out of it. The local creek I
paddle is full of sharp granite rocks and concrete dams. I paddle all
winter (coldest was 22 degrees F). I just havn't seen the plastic
problems.

For what it is worth,

I'm very impressed with the plastic on my new Blade, this must be one of
the toughest / stiffest plastics out there. Its one strong boat!
I'd also like to congratulate Pyranha on the short time it takes them to
design / proto / manufacture their new designs. Thanks for keeping us
paddlers up to date with designs that work, I look forwards to paddling the
next project.
