I just bought a used Keowee II (by Aquaterra) and I'm sick of sounding
stupid in front of other more knowledgable paddlers. The people in the
store pronounce it "keewee" like the fruit kiwi. But then why is there
a letter "o" in the name? Is it pronounced "kee-oh-ee"? I don't
know...everyone keeps correcting me....maybe I'll just stop telling
anyone I have a kayak....oh well...

It is "Keewee", my understanding is that the o is silent. But if you
really want to be sure why don't you call aquaterra and ask them. Their
tel # is (803)855-5995.

Since Aquaterra is in Easley, S.C., I'm assuming the Keowee is
intended to have the same pronunciation as the lake not far from there
(close to Clemson, S.C.). Of course, it's a Native American word, but
it's definitely pronounced around these parts with three syllables,
with an "O" clearly heard in the middle.

My vote, though: just get out on a river and forget petty little
civilized issues like proper pronunciation.

Paul, the confusion is widespread. There is a company building kayaks
(they say capable of Class V, one at least) in California; a woman from
New Zealand came here and designed the Kiwi (like the fruit) kayaks
("the right-side-up kaysks") which include raftable boats sold with
frames that can link up 4 kayaks and do well in ocean paddling..

Keowee by aquaterra is quite different. Look in the Paddler or Canoe
and Kayak marketing magazine from ths fall/winter and contact them for
info.

Looks like some people are using the keowee for surf paddling...

I'm sure Ann Dwyer, the owner of Kiwi Kayaks, one of Aquaterra's
competitors, is thrilled to hear those guys referrring to another boat
with the name she owns. Around here, we say "Kia-wee" to refer to the
Aquaterra boat.

I called Perception to ask about the new Acadia vs the Caspia and
Keowee (performance-wise). Anyway the folks at Perception refer
to it as Ki-o-wi.BTW, how do like yours?

In article <4chgeb$6...@agate.berkeley.edu>,

As an owner of a Kiwi Kopapa kayak, from Ann Dwyer's company, I think
I'll run out and start a kayak company to make boats, and call them
things like a Pirowette, a Reesponse, a Daencer, and some other names
as well, all which are different spellings than all those well-known
boats from other manufacturers, but pronounced the same as all those
other, well known boats.

You think Dagger or Perception might have just a teenie weenie little
problem with this?

I think so, and I doubt seriously if Perception is going to go out and
do somethng like this. *I* pronouonce it "Kee-o-wee", and I pronounce
the company's name who made my Kopapa "Kee-wee", like the fruit.

OOPs. I will have to spread the word that the o is not silent. I am glad
someone called the source.

I'm a native of the upper South Carolina area. Keowee is the name of a
good sized man-made lake in the area. I assume it is a Cherokee
indian name. It is pronounced with the 'o' and has nothing
to do with New Zealand that I know of.
