I'd be interested in any impressions of their products, good or bad, that you
may have. Any others I should be aware of?
Thanks.

I'll bite.... don't know all of them, but here's what I know.
> McQuade Canoe????
> Spencer-Hurley Canoe Company
Heard of them, never seen one of their boats, good reputation.
> North Bay Canoe
Good, serviceable boats. Not overly pretty or finely built.
> Northwoods Canoe????
> Bearwood Canoe Company
Absolutely the most beautiful canoes made. Pam Wedd's finishes are
incredible and her boats paddle as good as they look. Worth every
penny.
> Chestnut Canoe
If you mean Ken Solway's operation north of Cobourg.... Ken owns a
large number of the original molds from the REAL Chestnut Canoe
Company. If you want authentic shape, this is it.
> Cedarwood Canoes
Good reputation, never paddled one.
> Temagami Canoe
Very good shop, includes the original Temagami Trapper model if you're
looking for a nice solo boat, also does a fine job on finish.
> West Coast Canoe
Sorry, I'm from Ontario

Bill makes a strong, workman-like canoe, and his v-stern model covered with
fiberglass is the standard for the Tobique River Valley. His Chickadee model
is scaled down somewhat, but still a very stout canoe. Bill's canoes are meant
to be used, and used hard.
There are a number of Canadian builders listed in the Wooden Canoe Heritage
Association's Online Builders and Supplier's Directory - in nearly every
province. A few of these builders have catalogs online as well - you can find
links to them on the WCHA pages.
The exchange rate makes canoe purchases from these builders very attractive
right now - though some are raising their prices to compensate.
In any case, I would visit the builder and paddle the canoe before you
purchase. Most of them will have a waiting list - 3-12 months - but you won't
be sorry. Even the same "Chestnut Prospector Style" hull from three different
builders will paddle differently...
The quality of canoes, hull shape, finishes will range from the very bad to
the exceptionally good. Caveat Emptor.
