I'm potentially interested in purchasing Sit-On-Top kayaks from Ocean
Kayak. My wife is interested in the new Dawn Trakker, mainly because of
the convertible top. I've more interested in a Scupper Pro, but I've
never seen one and I've never used either type. Does anyone have
comments/reviews of these kayaks? Is the Dawn Trakker much slower than
the Scupper Pro?

Hi Neal,

I've had a Scupper Pro for over a year now, at my cottage. I first used
one in Belize. Its a great recreational boat, I can let friends use it
and don't have to worry about them learning to roll. I havent taken it
on any trips, but would like to try because of the storage room
available (vs. my whitewater kayak). I'd also like to try it for
surfing, but haven't hauled it down to Lake Ontario yet.
Can't speak for the Dawn Trakker....

All SOT's are slow. Are VW Bugs fast?

Is that true? Recent postings have claimed that the Scupper Pro is a pretty
fast kayak. I was thinking about buying a Scrambler because it's got a good
reputation and because it's only 11 ft long. Would a Scrambler be THAT much
faster and better as a touring kayak?

Tx paddler obviously needs a glass belly button so he can see where he's
going.
Sit on top surf skis are among the fastest of paddle powered craft, and some
of the small sit on tops built in glass are no slouches either. I suspect that
most river boat (WWboats) would be lucky to beat a scrambler, much less
a wave witch or a cuda.
There is nothing inherently slow about sit on tops- most are hampered by
design compromises and weight due to funky plastic construction.
One of our boats, a Wave Witch single, beat out a whole fleet in a novice
race in Oakland. The Paddler had all of 15 minutes experience in kayaks
before the race and still she won!

Should have read this first--a Scrambler is going to be much slower than
a scupper because its shorter and fatter- a real tub, whereas the scupper
at least looks like a boat.

And not all boats are designed to be fast. I have a Perception Pegasus
which is faster than my OC-1 but slower than any of my flat water boats.
But, like the OC-1, it is designed to turn and manuever. It is as fast as
most kayaks on the river. Faster than some and slower than others. It is
designed to play in WW and it does that nicely!

It all depends on how you intend to use the boat.
=================================================
(I assume in Cindy's last sentence it should have read "Scupper" not
"Scrambler", since the Scupper is definitely the faster of the two)

I own both a Scrambler XT and a Scupper (pre-PRO,...but have used the
PRO also). The Scrambler XT is a good all around play boat,...if you
do not plan to paddle more than 4-6 miles on a given day then the
"tub" like characteristics will not be a problem for you (just think of
it as getting more exercise),...the Scrambler XT is also much more fun
in the surf than a Scupper.
If you plan to paddle longer distances the Scupper is a better choice,
the Scupper is also much better for carrying camping gear in the
hatches.
The Scrambler XT was also designed for use as a diving platform with
a preformed area for carrying an air tank,...I have noticed in recent
Ocean Kayak brochures that the Scupper Pro is now available with the
same preformed area on the stern in place of the rear hatch.
