A start might be:
http://www.marinedieseldirect.com/yanmar/marine-engines/yanmar-engine-identification-reference.html

I've got the 3HM. Slightly less HP and raw water cooled. The "H" is
either for High power or High RPM; I've heard both. Continuous duty at
3200 RPM, one hour at 3500 RPM. No telling how many hours on mine when
I got it, but I've put 600 hours with no problems save one. The Yanmar
secondary fuel filter is troublesome. Almost impossible to keep it
from leaking. New filter didn't help. Remove it and replace with
something else.

My old boat had a 3HM30 raw water cooled. Sometime since 1981
when the boat was new, Yanmar upgraded some of their engines.
The "same horsepower" replacement for the 3HM30 was the 3GM30(F)
and the 3HM30 was upgraded to the 3HM35(F). It was available new
4 years ago when I repowered so I'm sure there is info out there on it.
Have you checked the Yanmar website? You might contact Mack-
Boring in New Jersey. They are a major distributor for Yanmar. I
don't see the 3HM series listed on their website but a human there
can probably tell you what the situation is. I wish I had replaced mine
with the 3HM35F since it would have been a drop-in. As it was I had
to re-engineer the engine bed. A real pain.
