I came across a deal at Radio Shack Canada - They seem to be clearing out
their stock of Fugawi navigation software. You can even check which stores
till have it on their web site. I bought one - cost was C$99.00 - it is
version 3.0.2.6 (upgradable) and it comes with USA Streets, Canada Streets,
US nautical planning charts, manual. This package normally costs C$159.00.

I was thinking about upgrading to the full version of OziExplorer (with GPS
support), but it would have cost US$75.00 (C$119.00) and includes no street
maps.

No connection with Radio Shack etc, etc. Just a heads up.

Here's another "heads up":

I just picked up a copy of Fugawi - It comes with US & Canadian
street maps.
The Canadian street maps seems to be out of date.
Does anyone know if these can be updated?
---------------------------------------------------------------
So it may or may not be a 'good deal' :)

Dave,

I have just e-mailed Fugawi and asked about updates to the Streets CD,s -
The Canada Streets CD is missing a road near our house that has been there
for over 5 years - Perhaps the Radio Shack copy that I purchased was old
stock, but Fugawi should advise year/version of street maps when offering
these CD,s as a selling point. It would be interesting to know if a new copy
of Fugawi direct from them would have more up to date Street CD,s.

I was able to upgrade the main Fugawi program to the latest version from
their web site. They should also offer download upgrades to the Streets CD,s
but there is no mention of these.

At C$99.00, Fugawi is still less than OziExplorer for those who want GPS
connectivity but at the full price of C$159 with dated street maps, it may
be a questionable.

Just to be clear, OziExplorer has 3 'versions':
1)
The free "Shareware Demo Version".
- does have GPS connectivity
- does have some limitations, compared to the paid version
2)
The free "Trial Version".
- requires the "Shareware Demo Version" to be installed
- does NOT have GPS connectivity
- has most of the features of the paid version enabled
3)
The paid(registered) version.
- has all features

As it says on the Ozi website:
To evaluate OziExplorer you need to use both the
"shareware/demo" version and the "trial" version
as they have different functions activated.

Canada is off the chart when it comes to bundled chart/maps. seems the
landbase data is public domain in the US but in canada somebody (eg, NDI)
pays big for the copyrights and charges accordingly-even though we paid for
the surveys through taxes. no matter what you buy nobletec, garmin...they
have poor canadian coverage becasue of the large expense to do so. I bought
si-tex pcradar and it comes bundled with a vector chatr of the
world.......seems the world ends at the bay of funday though! It is our gov
policy that is doing this, not the re-sellers.
