I have a 77 Lancer 25, which I have had for 3 years. There is a good
article in Practical Sailor's book Practical Boat Buying on the Lancer 28
which is the same boat just a little bit longer. I"ll be glad to send
you a copy.
I know what you mean about maintance. I have learned more about
fiberglass work, electrical work, and leak fixing than I ever cared to
know. All in all it's not a bad first boat. It was made to be trailered
that is why the keel is so shallow and has such an unusual boxy shape.
That's also why the beam is 8 feet. Because of the shallow keel, the
boat does not sail well to windward in more than 12 to 14 knots of wind.
When the wind picks up the boat heels and there is nothing under the boat
to keep it from slipping to leeward.
In 10 to 15 knots the boat is alot of fun to sail. The boat is very
lightly rigged and is not meant for heavy weather. I sail in the norther
Chesapeake around Baltimore and do mostly day sailing. Overnighting is
more like camping out, but I have been taking 2-3 day trips anyway.
I would like to hear from you about your experiences with you Lancer.
