Our rate for our small boat, insured with BOAT/US, dropped due to our
fortunate "safe boater with no claims" status.

BUT ask if the policy covers damage caused by, for instance, an old poorly
maintained coolant hose breaking. Asked that of my home and auto agent, herself
a sailor, got an answer a couple hours later of "no", and was insured by
BOAT/U.S. that evening. Also, is the boat's value "agreed upon" or depreciated?
Yacht policies will have nice incidentals like EPA cleanup costs and the like.

Nice to deal with an agency that ONLY insures boats, and understands the
word Spinnaker.
Their phone is (207) 244-7251 and there is a web site.

I second the question. It doesn't sound like you're comparing marine policy vs
marine policy. While BOAT/U.S. seems to be undercut by a little these days,
that's too significant a difference.
Insurance is very competitive. If you compare the policies, I think you'll find
some significant differences.
I don't think Florida or the boat's age are the significant items. We're quite
a bit older and they gave us a month's rider for the ICW and 50 or 100 miles
offshore for $25, basically pocket change in the insurance trade ... it
probably didn't cover the administrative costs.

Are you by chance in the Great Lakes, John? If so, check out Wolverine
Insurance located in Michigan. They only insure GL boats so as to avoid
payments on hurricane-damaged boats. My premiums are a fraction of those
paid by coastal boaters for the same boat.

So its just liability not for damage to the boat itself?
