Boat Insurance

We are prepared to move aboard and will be sailing in the Gulf of Mexico,
all around Florida, up and down the ICW and U.S. east coast, Bahamas, and
perhaps the Caribbean. We have heard that hurricane season demands that you
be north of Morehead City, NC, or south of 12 degrees north (in most
policies) during the season.

Does anyone have any other information? Can you recommend an insurance
company? We will be vagabonds in a 35 or 38 foot sailboat (boat not
purchased yet).

I've seen posts indicating BoatUS might be a good place to start in
looking for insurance. I am not a saltwater boater so I can't be of
much help but the geographical limits you mention seem awfully
stringent. There must be many thousands of insured boats that stay
within these latitudes throughout hurricane season. I'll be watching
to see what replies you get from the veterans.

Year round boater in Florida with 40' Trawler insured with Boat US. No
problem!
There is a rider you need to get for the Bahamas however, not sure how much.

Plans sound exciting. We must talk.

We have been using Boat/US for many years. First "claim" wasn't really one
because of the deductible and they assure me that they will not be removing
the 10% discount for "no claim" The paid the recovery team directly,
without a deductible. We are restricted to waters north of Jacksonville, so
there may be a premium for FL boats.

For what it's worth and your mileage may vary </jargon> the rates I got from
BoatUS were about 2x what I got going via Tampa Bay Marine Underwriters,
www.marineins.com. However, this is also the agency that tells me I can't
get a refund after moving to a lower cost area. If that's not an issue for
you, then I think they will do a good job.

After all the answers, be sure you're comparing apples to apples when you
talk to an insurer or agent. The three crucial factors in your coverage are
that it should be 1) agreed value on the hull, 2) replacement cost on parts
and equipment, and 3) all-risk.

I have BoatUS also, they have been a great insurance company. I have had one
claim with immediate response and service. No complaints at all
