1) Set for gps for hddd mm ss.s format
2) Enter your waypoints as degrees minutes seconds
3) When you have all of your waypoints entered, revert back to hddd mm.mmm
format.
This works on my Garmin 48.

e.g 41 seconds to the nearest 1/10 is 41/2= 20 , 20/3 = 7 tenths
To convert seconds to tenths of minutes, ask someone old enough to have gone
to school when forced learning of the 'times tables' were manditory. Yeah, I
still remember all of them and when I need a calculator to divide by six
I'll turn in my slide-rule.

Don't know which charts John uses but our local, large scale, NOAA Coast
Survey charts don't have the tenths of minutes marked either. Instead, the
charts provide tick marks for every 10 seconds and a scale in seconds for the
last 10. Of course, when using the large scale, where distances and accuracy
are more critical, then it becomes a nuisance to have to convert.
