Most of my charts are marked in degrees/minutes/seconds, but I prefer to use
degrees/minutes/tenths for my waypoints. It seems that there must be a quick
and easy way to convert without calculations. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I am assuming that this is for your gps.

1) Set for gps for hddd mm ss.s format
2) Enter your waypoints as degrees minutes seconds
3) When you have all of your waypoints entered, revert back to hddd mm.mmm
format.

This works on my Garmin 48.

6 seconds per tenth. Take the seconds and divide them by six. You can also try
halvig them and then dividing that result by 3 -this should be easy in the head.
You could go from the six times table but that 2, 3 trick seems easier.

e.g 41 seconds to the nearest 1/10 is 41/2= 20 , 20/3 = 7 tenths

Since the conversion is usually from tenths of minutes(GPS) to seconds
(chart) it is quite simple math to multiply by the tenths of minutes given
by the GPS by 10 to get the seconds to plot on the chart.

To convert seconds to tenths of minutes, ask someone old enough to have gone
to school when forced learning of the 'times tables' were manditory. Yeah, I
still remember all of them and when I need a calculator to divide by six
I'll turn in my slide-rule.

I have yet to see a chart that is marked in degrees minutes and seconds.
All admiralty charts that I have around me are clearly marked in degrees
minutes and tenths of a minute.

What publications are you using?

Don't know which charts John uses but our local, large scale, NOAA Coast
Survey charts don't have the tenths of minutes marked either. Instead, the
charts provide tick marks for every 10 seconds and a scale in seconds for the
last 10. Of course, when using the large scale, where distances and accuracy
are more critical, then it becomes a nuisance to have to convert.
