I currently own a 1974 CAL 25 (for sale). We're moving up and want to
purchase a boat in the 32' range that we will be able to begin doing some
bule water sailing (CAL is presently housed on Kerr Lake, NC). I have
recently located a 1974 32' ketch rigged Mariner that I am considering
buying. If anyone out there has first hand experience or can offer info
that might help me to determine how well this boat will suit our needs, I
would love to hear from you! I'm new to Mariner sailboats and although
I ha've heard of them, that's really about the extent of my knowledge ot
them. Is this boat specifically and Mariner's in general capable of ocean
sailing (Newport, RI to Bermuda someday?) I can be contacted at the
following e-mail address: olams...@aol.com

Thanks to all who repond to this plea

H have had both a Mariner 31 (which is essentially the same hull as the
32 but without the clipper bow) and a Fuji 32 which was built in the same
yard.

I have sailed extensively along the coast of California with our Mariner
and one other. I think it is a great boat.

Mariners have sailed to Hawaii, Mexico and one from Japan to California
single handed by a woman who, in retrospect, shouldn't have done it.

You need to have a good survey as they are now getting on in years.
Places to make sure you have looked into include plywood deck, fuel tank
which has a tendency to rust on top where you can't paint it, and mast
step. (mast is deck stepped and decks have been known to drop a little)

I was always sorry we sold the Mariner. It was a better boat than the
Fuji, but the Fuji was nice too. Both built in Japan and excellent
craftsmanship. Easily on a par with Swan, Baltic and similar boats.

I just purchased a mariner 32 1972 hull 37 named Aegir in Honolulu . We are the second owner and hope for the best and plan for the worst. That's all you can do wither old boats . The main mast has been replaced with aluminum , teak decks replaced with glass. She seams to be stout . Honolulu sucks gota go.

IIRC, these are sound boats but condition rules. A boat that old can
have many issues which would make voyaging inadvisable. Did you get a
good survey?

I was one of the original owners of this boat. If you are still interested, I would be happy to tell you what I know about her. We sailed her from California to Mexico, across to the Society Islands, Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, Figi and Australia.

Greetings:

I am in the process of purchasing a Mariner 32 in NY. Hull No 12. Boat name ARENA.

I would be pleased if you could give me some things to look out for. Heading to NY next week for a provisional surgery.
If that goes well we will have a mechanical survey and a professional survey.

Thanks,
Mike Dueweke
