Hi guys, would I be doing any damage to my car if I were to pull my 1989
Bayliner Capri with my 2.2L Honda Accord? How much does this boat weigh?
How much would the trailer weigh? It is an Escort trailer. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

Um Well a little more info on the boat would be helpful. However I would
guess you will probably tear your car up pretty badly trying to tow a boat
with it. Mine is only an 18 FT Bowrider and I have a full size van and in
places I get bogged down a little. So with out knowing the specifics of the
boat and just assuming its at least 15 ft or better with at the very least
an outboard on it I would say you would be doing a great deal of damage to
your car. You also have to consider getting it out of the water. You have
front wheel drive I assume. Well most ramps are at a pretty good angle into
the water. If the ramp is wet at all and lets assume for a moment it will be
with the boat weighing down the back end and the wet pavement under the
front wheels you will likely just sit there and spin your tires not to
mention possibly sliding the whole rig into the lake or where ever your
planning to take it. Personally I just don't think its a good Idea.
Just my opinion.

NOT a good idea. If anything, that car is probably rated to tow 1000 or
1500 lbs max.

Craig first thing you need to do is call your car insurance broker to make
sure that your policy is up to date and check that water damage is in the
coverage. And when you leave your driveway make sure you have the boat
pointed in the direction of the water... Cuz after you start movin you ain't
stoppin!!!

You'd be better off fastening a hitch to a stingray bike and pulling it with
that.
You will kill someone (if not you, some innocent victim) with the Accord
brainstorm.

Towing might not be a problem, but trying make a panic stop will even be a
bigger one. Most of the current small cars are limited to1500 lbs max with about
300 lb hitch weight. A good way to check this is look for a GVWT (Gross Vehicle
Weight Towing) as this gives you the top weight for the braking system.

Actuall, I towed my 1967 Winner 16' with Cuddy Cabin
and 115 Merc outboard with my Honda Accord 4-Cylinder.

Had no problem pulling on local roads or at speed on the highway. No
problem going up hills, or at the ramp. The ramp
I used was in very good condition. I was always careful
to:

Go Slow. On highway, about 55. It would have done more.
Not use Overdrive / 4th (I've heard that will ruin the transmission)
Be very aware of the condition of the ramp.
Have someone standing by with chocks to block the wheels @ ramp.
Avoid routes with any large / extended hills.
Not overwork/overheat the car or transmission.
Never pulled (or had to) on extremly hot days
Etc. Etc.

It might sound like I made many adjustments - but actually
I just mean I was aware & careful. It worked fine.

However, I am *not* suggesting towing more than
the vehicle is rated for. I don't know the exact
weight that my rig was. Probably right on the line
of the max for an Accord.

This means, if you want to tow that rig, it would be good if the car
is stick transmission, the road to the lake is reasonably flat for
most of the way, and you know how to use LESS throttle than normal,
while towing. Slowing gently is a plus, and speeding up to a modest
speed SLOWLY is a must.
If you can't drive that way, you need a truck.

He may not be in his right mind, and was a valid question. I worked with a
guy in the 70's who towed a 22' boat with a Maverick. Saw him once on the
highway and was scary. And this is as I towed my racecar by him at 70 mph.
Of course my tow vehicle wayed more than the racecar.

I'd make one amendment to this: automatic tranny rather than manual,
more torque, especially when pulling out of the water. I'd also want
the boat trailer to have surge brakes.

I've towed my 3500# MasterCraft 205 with my Honda Odyssey (rated at
3500#)for about 20,000 miles. Before that, I used a Toyota Tacoma
4-cyl, 2WD, manual tranny. That's why I recommend the automatic.

I hate big "American" trucks; I recommend against going that route. I
only tow a small percentage of the time. The rest of the time I hafta
drive in city traffic and park at the Safeway. Shudder! No big trucks
for me. YMMV.

Hmmm...I have used a stick Ford Festiva (1.4L) for about five seasons
to haul a bass boat 20 miles to the local lake. It's an econobox. The
boat is not much more than 1200 lb. I save the S10 truck for the 2
ton travel trailer and the 1 ton deep vee launch.

(That Festiva box was designed by Mazda and built by Kia for Ford;
highly, HIGHLY recommended, if you want reliable.)

That's quite an absolute statement, Steve. Our 1.8 liter Accord pulls our
Force 5 and Sunfish sailboat trailers like a dream. Not too shabby with a
PWC trailer, too.

Mossberg makes a 12 gauge shotgun called the "Mariner". It has an 18.5 inch
long barrel, no choke, pump action, and a marine environment resistant
finish. It comes with a shoulder stock and a pistol grip for firing from the
hip.

I wouldn't fire it from the shoulder with the pistol grip. You would be
asking for shoulder and/or facial damage.

The pistol grip option is not for target shooting at a distance, it's for
close-in action against live aggressors. The short barrel and pistol grip
allows the weapon to be kept close to your body and maneuvered quickly. Your
adrenalin will give you the strength to handle the recoil when fired from
the hip, or in just about any other position.

Weapons are not needed in most areas of the world. If your travels take you
to the more dangerous areas, then you need to decide if you need to be
armed. If you're not ready to kill an armed aggressor, without hesitation,
then don't carry weapons. Even if you do decide to carry a weapon, a shotgun
may not be right for you.
