part of the major trawler happening of the year on the east coast!
Enjoy four days of fun on the water!
You are invited to West Marine Trawler Fest, the unique rendezvous for
people who cruise, voyage and live aboard powerboats, and for people who
want to.
It's open to skippers and crews of all makes of cruising motorboats and
motorsailers, without restriction to brand or model, and you don't need a
boat to participate.
It's a rendezvous!
West Marine Trawler Fest is a rendezvous in the fullest sense of the word,
and it's open to all makes of motor vessels used for cruising, not just a
single brand. Trawler Fest is also a rendezvous in the truest sense in that
Solomons will be the farewell for boats and crews heading south on the ICW
to Florida and beyond.
It's a cruising academy!
Title sponsorship by West Marine, the world's largest retailer of boating
equipment, has enabled us to present an expanded program of seminars,
workshops and demonstrations featuring experienced cruisers, manufacturer
representatives and leading experts in boating.
Featured speakers will include the much-travelled Brian Saunders of the
all-aluminum Traveller, veteran ICW cruisers, experienced Circle Route
cruisers, the sea sisters of Women Aboard, expert advisors from West
Marine, diesel specialist Mike Maynard of Lugger/Northern Lights, cruising
veteran Jack Hochadel of Willard Marine, varnishing expert Barry Campbell
of York River Yacht Haven, Lehman Ford guru Bob Smith, oil-change expert
John Napurano of Nautical Ventures of Fort Lauderdale, Dr. Daniel Carlin of
Voyager Medicine, cruising guide author Clairborne Young, and long-time
cruiser Al Golden of International Marine Insurance Services.
It's an in-water boat show!
Examples of new cruising boats from Kadey-Krogen, Mainship, Monk,
Nordhavn, Nova and other makes will be open for inspection during West
Marine Trawler Fest, as will other vessels, such as a highly customized
Grand Banks 49 Classic and the all-aluminum Traveller, plus other boats.
If you're just getting into cruising under power, there is no better place
to start than Solomons where you'll be able to inspect boats large and
small in the water, learn a great deal from the seminars, and talk to
people who are already enjoying the wonderful lifestyle.
It's a good time!
How about a welcome party Solomons style? How about a wonderful buffet
befitting Chesapeake's mouth-watering heritage? How about a happy hour
every day? How about an open-air Sunday brunch on the waterfront? How about
meeting hundreds of other people with similar boats and similar interests?
It's a good cause!
A portion of the proceeds at West Marine Trawler Fest will be donated to
Chesapeake Bay Foundation which seeks to protect and enhance the health of
the Bay through education, advocacy, monitoring and celebration.
It's also a cruise in company!
For skippers and crews with boats on vacation, there will be in informal
cruise in company immediately following the rendezvous, as interest
Solomons, Maryland, October 9-12

about 90 minutes distant, will be your destination.
Holiday Inn Select Solomons, a resort and conference center, and adjacent
marinas on Back Creek will be the focus of our activities.
Trawler Fest takes place on the weekend prior to the powerboat show at
Annapolis, at the same time as the sailboat show.

boating supplies and apparel, already sponsors sailing events such as West
Marine Pacific Cup, West Marine Cruising Rallies and West Marine
Passagemaker Seminars.
Additionally, West Marine is proud to support organizations--such as
Chesapeake Bay Foundation, International Wildlife Coalition and Keep
America Beautiful--dedicated to protecting and enhancing the boating
environment.
West Marine, headquartered in Watsonville, California, sells through 170

E&B Discount Marine stores and its Port Supply wholesale division.
Behind the scenes, a dream
West Marine Trawler Fest is organized by Georgs Kolesnikovs who, since
capturing the Cape Horn sailing record with the trimaran Great American,
has turned to motorboating. Here's how he describes the motivation:
"My dream is that West Marine Trawler Fest will become to cruisers under
power what Oshkosh is to people who fly their own airplanes, what Americade
is to touring motorcyclists, and what Boston is to runners, an annual
pilgrimage and entertaining gathering of like-minded people and the boats
they love, participating in the activity they love most. To
that end, I'm delighted to have the support of West Marine and other sponsors."
Value-packed, all-inclusive price
Would you believe the complete four-day rendezvous program, from Thursday
welcome party with food and drink, to Friday seminars, lunch, happy hour
and buffet, to Saturday seminars, lunch, happy hour and awards banquet, to
Sunday farewell brunch, to the in-water boat show, plus special treats and
all the fun you can cram into four days, for only $195 per person with
advance registration? That's a saving of $50 per person over the regular price.
Sign up prior to October 1 and also receive a free West Marine Trawler
Fest T-shirt for each registrant when you arrive in Solomons.
What if you can only come for one day
No problem. Request a day pass when registering. One can participate a la
carte, picking and choosing only portions of the schedule, if the complete
four-day program is not possible.
What if you only want to see boats
Be our guests! There is no admission charge or registration needed, but
you may need to wait in line behind those who have registered.

Seminars to help you cruise successfully
You are going to have a lot of fun at West Marine Trawler Fest, but you'll
also come away a smarter skipper, a better first mate, a sharper crew member.
Much of Friday and Saturday at Trawler Fest will be devoted to a wide
range of seminars and lectures, many of them on topics specifically
requested by attendees at Solomons last year.
Featured speakers will include the much-travelled Brian Saunders of the
all-aluminum Traveller, veteran ICW cruisers, experienced Circle Route
cruisers, the sea sisters of Women Aboard, expert advisors from West
Marine, diesel specialist Mike Maynard of Lugger/Northern Lights, cruising
veteran Jack Hochadel of Willard Marine, varnishing expert Barry Campbell
of York River Yacht Haven, Lehman Ford guru Bob Smith, oil-change expert
John Napurano of Nautical Ventures of Fort Lauderdale, Dr. Daniel Carlin of
Voyager Medicine, cruising guide author Clairborne Young, and long-time
cruiser Al Golden of International Marine Insurance Services.
Brian and Traveller have arrived at Solomons after a cruise from San
Francisco via Panama and Maine. You may recall seeing the all-aluminum
custom 52 on the cover of PassageMaker Magazine last year. Brian has
150,000 offshore miles under his belt, in sail and power vessels. Other
seminar presenters will be equally expert and engaging.
A special two-hour seminar on cruising the ICW--an interesting and
valuable presentation for old hands and newbies--will conclude with a
get-together for boats and crews heading south following Trawler Fest.
Last year, we honored Jim and Susy Sink as Passagemakers of the Year for
their circumnavigation of the world. This year, our special guests of
honor will be outstanding coastal and inland cruisers whose passagemaking
is just as inspiring--and perhaps more readily achievable by the rest of
us. Their presentation on the Circle Route, the circumnavigation of the
eastern U.S. will doubtless be one of the highlights of the weekend.
Here is your choice of topics for Solomons.
Friday 0830-1000
LESSONS LEARNED IN 150,000 MILES OF CRUISING
Hear the gospel on voyaging aboard power vessels according to Brian
Saunders of the ocean-going trawler Traveller. You don't need a lot of

it simple, and go now!
SKIPPER OVERBOARD
West Marine advisors and other experts will address the vexing problems of
having the skipper--or anyone else--go overboard.
Friday 1030-1200

the sea, offers advice on preparation and medical readiness for any
cruising destination.

Win a cruise on the Inside Passage to Alaska on the magnificent Malahide
trawler Explorer!
You can win a vacation for two on a $15,000 crewed charter to Alaska via
the Inside Passage aboard MV Explorer when you come to West Marine Trawler
Fest in 1997.
One couple will be chosen in a drawing at Solomons, another was selected
at the Puget Sound Trawler Fest in June, for a 12-day cruise from
Bellingham to Ketchikan aboard the magnificent 60-foot Malahide trawler
operated by Captain Richard Friedman.
Explorer is a classic North Sea trawler, with wooden hull built in Norway.
She was fitted with an aluminum deck house and a rich custom teak interior
by Malahide Shipyard in Ireland. Captain Richard, his wife Nancy and their
three sons have cruised extensively with Explorer from Maine to Alaska.
Ocean Navigator magazine described Explorer as "a yacht which may embody
the dreams of every long-range power voyager." In 1994 she was
featured on an Ocean Navigator cover.
The winners will be accompanied by Georgs Kolesnikovs and Norlene Chong of
Trawler World on the cruise in May, 1998, that will take the charter party
through some of the most spectacular scenery in the world on the Inside
Passage in British Columbia and Alaska.
The Puget Sound winner is Jim Hawkins of Phoenix, Arizona.
The 12-day vacation prize for two aboard Explorer includes all expenses
except hard liquor, vintage wines, fishing license and gratuity. The
itinerary for your crewed charter will be modified by Richard to suit your
cruising interests, whether it be fishing, whales, wildlife and
other attractions, the greatest of which is the spectacular scenery.
Explorer's chef, Pat Brown, will customize the menu to suit your palate.
Explorer is equipped with the most modern electronics, amenities and
recreational equipment. She displaces 78 long tons and carries 2,200
gallons of fuel and 600 gallons of water. The main engine is a 208-hp Volvo
Penta.
With her four-fin stabilizer system, steadying sails and a cruising range
of 3,000 miles, Explorer is capable of delivering her passengers to any
port in remarkable comfort, style and safety. This unique vessel commands
the attention and respect of mariners in every harbor she enters. After her
last refit in Maine, Explorer won the silver cup as the best powerboat in
show at the prestigious Newport Wooden Boat Show.
When you come aboard, be prepared for an extraordinary cruise in comfort,
style and safety amid the wild splendor on the Inside Passage to Alaska.
If you have access to the World Wide Web, take a look at Explorer and all
that awaits you at http://www.az.com/~richardf
If you are interested in chartering Explorer yourself, please write to
Georgs Kolesnikovs at in...@trawlerworld.com or call him toll-free at
1-888-968-3378 for information.
Rules and conditions governing the Alaska charter promotion: You must be
18 years or older to be eligible for the drawing. No purchase is necessary
and you do not need to be present to win. One couple will be chosen at
Poulsbo, another at Solomons, for the 12-day cruise from
Bellingham, Washington, to Ketchikan, Alaska, in May 1998, accompanied by
a twosome from Trawler World. The prize for two aboard Explorer includes
all expenses except hard liquor, vintage wines, fishing licence and
gratuity. Winners travel to Bellingham and from Ketchikan at their own
expense. Registrants are automatically entered in the draw at each event.
Other entries on forms available at each event will be accepted until 6
p.m. Saturday of that event. Only one entry per person permitted. The prize
cannot be transferred, sold or redeemed for cash. Employees of West Marine,
Trawler World and West Marine Trawler Fest sponsors are not eligible for
the drawing. All entry forms and information thereon become the property of
