Hi,
I'm taking the next three weeks to sail solo from SW FL to the Western
Caribbean and would like to rent a hand held satellite phone for
safety. I inquired at the local marina and boat store but they are not
aware of anyone that does this type of service.

Does anyone have any experience w/ renting Sat phones?

I rented an Irridium Motorola 9500 phone from Outfitters satellite
rentals. http://www.outfittersatellite.com/ I think it was about $100
for two weeks and $1.95/minute. Counting FedEx and about 15 minutes of
air time the whole bill ended up about $150.

THere are a lot of rental operations on the web. Outfitters is cheapest
on basic service but others are a little less if you want data or phone
mail.

It's called a WEB search. You might want to give it a try some time.

Glenn, thanks for the info. I just found a simular deal at

http://www.satellitephoneservices.com

They have some really good prices so I may just buy something then
resell it after my trip.

Hi Mike,
For ultimate safety in your case a personal EPIRB is a thought :-(
As they say "alone is alone"! Do satellite phones work in the water?
