Can anyone advise on the likely lifetime of the engine mounts of a
Yanmar 1GM10. The boat is 9 years old and presumably so are the mounts.
Is there an easy way of finding out if they are still OK?

Also, if I replace them, should I use Yanmar mounts or is there a better
alternative (Vetus?)

Thanks for all advice received,

If the mounts are failing the alignment will change so an alignment
check is the first step. If it is still OK then the mounts are still
OK. And even if they are not if they have given you 9 years of good
service why go to the trouble of fitting a different make of mounting
instead of just fitting more of the same? To fit different mounts you
will probably have to lift the engine and redrill the engine beds and
you may have problems if the new mounts are not the same height as the
Yanmar ones

Actually I think this is backwards. Alignment could change due to many
things, and even if it is in alignment, the rubber could be shot. The
motor could be in perfect alignment when it is sitting still, but move
all around when running.

I would check the condition of the rubber and the bolts and generally,
just the soundness of the whole mount. If the rubber isn't loose, and
isn't swollen, it is probably ok. If the housing isn't corroded or
cracked, and the bolts are in good shape (threads not worn or rusted) so
that they can be tightened and adjusted, they are probably ok.

From my very limited experience, the things I've seen that can cause
problems are fuel leaks on the rubber, causing it to fall apart,
adjustment nuts that were loose, causing the bolt to have the threads
damaged, rust, and inferior mounts that crack or break.

I've ordered new mounts from my Yanmar dealer several times. From my
experience, it takes more than just telling them you want mounts. I'm
not convinced that the mounts are factory items, I would certainly get
the dimensions on them, the weight ratings they are made for (one set
they sent me, supposedly for my 3QM30 750 lb motor, were rated at 150
lbs each. Heel the boat, motor is in the Qberth??)

I also had the price vary from around $30 each (for the "correct" heavy
duty ones) to $70 each for the cheap, stamped steel 150 lb ones. Go
figure that one! Quiz them severely before parting with your money. It
would be wise to have them fax you a drawing and the specs of what they
are going to sell you so that you can measure and see if it is a good
match.

From memory the 1GM10 factory mounts are of different 'strengths' front and
rear, and also different to the 2gm and 3gm, this to allow the motor to move
sufficiently to minimise the vibrations inherent in single cylinder diesels
with light flywheels. Quite successfully in my opinion!
It may pay to stay with the (correct) factory mounts, or be sure the
alternatives have the same flexibility.
