We didn't go there with any intentions of buying anything. But when my
wife and I stopped at the Simrad booth to check out their latest radar,
I found they were discontinuing the unit I've had my eye on for years -
the RA-771 with 3D imaging. (It still has the latest technology, but
Simrad is changing all of their electonics to conform to the same
appearance and operational features). I mentioned it to their rep and
he told me Consumer Marine Electronics was practically giving them away
at the show for $749 with a 2k radome. I looked at my wife and she
reminded me I'd been talking about installing radar for years, so it
certainly wasn't an "impulse" buy. (At least if I bought it I'd
probably stop whining about not having one). I ran over to the Consumer
booth (conveniently in the next isle), whipped out the ol' American
Express Card and placed my order. Then I remembered why I hadn't yet
installed radar on 1994 Carver Mariner - no place to mount it. So we
headed over to Atlantic Towers (they have a good reputation and some
other folks in our marina have them). Show price was $1650 for a custom
brushed aluminum radar arch with optional hinged mounts (to fit under
Champlain Canal bridges) and optional running light assembly.
Additional $350 for delivery and installation. I looked at my wife
again. She shrugged and started climbing on the display arch like
monkey bars. I took that as an okay and plunked down a deposit. Then I
felt guilty for the next several hours. Now, however, I am even more
itchy and excited for Spring. Oh Boy! Don't we love boating!!!!!

"...Ever After!'
"a little after..."

ps: This was a great boat show. More enjoyable than than recent years.

pps: (We won't talk about how the radar arch costs nearly three times
as much as the radome it will support).

ppps: Above price does not include show tickets, parking, tolls, $3
pretzels, $6 "personal" pizzas, various and sundry stupid junk we bought
and petty cash for our teenage daughter and her friend so they would
wander off for a while, leave us alone and bug the sales folks instead
by climbing all over their boats (we used to use those FM family radios
to keep tabs on 'em. Now that the frequencies are too crowded, we just
use cell phones)..

A young guy from Texas moves to California and goes to a big department
store looking for a job.
The manager says, "Do you have any sales experience?". The kid says "Yeah,
I was a salesman back home in Texas." Well, the boss liked the kid so he
gave him the job. "You start tomorrow and I'll come down after we close to
see how you did."
End of the first day, store is locked up and the manager comes down and
says "How many sales did you make today?" The kid says "One." The boss says
"Just one? Our sales people average 20 or 30 sales a day. How much was the
sale for?" Kid says "$101,050.00." Boss says "$101,050.00? What did you sell
him?" Kid says "First I sold him some fish hooks. Then I sold him a tackle
box. Then I sold him a pole. I asked where he was going fishing and he said
the bay so I took him to the boat department and sold him that twin engine
Searay. Then he said he didn't think his Toyota Tacoma could tow it so I
took him to automotive and sold him a 1 ton Dodge Cummins." The boss said "
A guy comes in to buy a fish hook and you sold him a boat and truck?"
Kid says " No, he came in to buy a box of tampons for his wife and I said,
"Well, since your weekend is shot, you might as well go fishing!""
