Will be crusing the Tampa area and have never been in open water. What
is a good, simple and reliable GPS?

Anything made by Garmin - the GPS 48, 12XL, the newer E-Trex...

Even the most basic GPS system will give you results that most accomplished
navigator of 25 years ago could only dream of.

Well, if you mean getting the boat to your destination without
knowing anything about navigation,
then I guess I agree.

But getting to Bermuda from New England, and getting to my
destinations in fog
25 years ago were realities, not dreams. One just needed to know
a lot more and pay attention.

Not that GPS isn't the neatest thing since sliced bread, but its
not like
say, the chronograph or the magnetic compass.

Over the last several years I have sailed thousands of miles using Garmin
hand held GPSs and been almost totally satisfied with them. (I thought their
mounting bracket was sort of Mickey Mouse but that is another story.) I just
bought a new Magellan hand held ($99) I played with it a bit but it will be
getting it's first true work out the first week of May. I will report back
if anyone is interested.

Up front I have to say that the Magellan display does not appear as readable
at the helm as the Garmin but I have gotten away from, or never developed
the habit of sailing by the GPS so the question may be moot .

I have a Magellan hand held model 320. it is amazing! all the nautical markers
are displayed (built in!) and it is less then $200! I have used it a lot and I
fully recommend this model (my second Magellan), or go for model 330 marine,
that includes maps.
Check any marine site (www.boatus.com, www.westmarine.com or
www.magellangps.com)

I recently bought my first sailboat and cruised home in it from St Pete to
Stuart FL. I bought a Garmin 48 and learned to use it on the trip.

It's designed for marine use - it has built in tables of navigation markers,
and a few other marine navigation functions. Any GPS will give you lat/lon.
if you are willing to spend $500 plus, you can get a charting GPS, but for
under $200 (I got it on sale for $179), go for the 48.

On a related question, my new boat has a Magellan Meridan GPS that won't
acquire sats. The previous owner said he didn't think he'd used it
since August 1999 when the counter rollover occurred so I'm thinking
that might be the problem. Does anyone know what can be done to get
this thing to work? I left it on while we did the sea trial and it
never found anything even after being on for over an hour. I've got the
manual but since it is a 1996 copyright there's no mention of the
rollover problem.

THanks,
Jim.

Hm. I looked on their site. Guess I didn't look hard enough. Thanks.

Garmin has several new models that support WAAS. WAAS is the most accurate
fix you can get. (6ft or better)

The etrx mariner is a great small handheld.

If you have a Y2K problem with a Magellan product, they will update it for
free.
