Is there anyone out there with a SABB diesel? (Not Saab)
I would like to know if it is possible to obtain parts for these
Norwegian built engines.
I am interested in a boat which has an 18 hp SABB diesel auxilliary; a
letter in the November issue of Latitude 38 indicated that it was
impossible to obtain parts for these engines. If you have a SABB engine
and know where to obtain parts, I would greatly appreciate that
information.
Thanks

I don't have one but am considering one.
The company seems still to be alive and well up there in Bergen and
marketing at least as far south as Germany. I think you could probably
deal directly with the company. Try: SABB Motor AS
PO Box 2728
5010 Bergen
Norway
Tel. 534 3510
Fax 534 4880
Telex 42559 sabb n
They write: "Full stocks of spares are maintained at all times and great
pride is taken in prompt spares service."

I Have an 18 HP 2 cylinder SABB with variable pitch prop.
(+ all the parts books etc)
The engine has done 3400 hrs and runs a treat. The compression is down a
bit But it starts ok and I can still make 5-5.5 knots INTO 15-20 Kn head
wind.

When it was new (1983) the first owner broke a valve spring and complained
to SABB. I have SABB's reply letter which basically says that SABB motors
do not break spings and if you take the head apart and reassemble it with
these new parts it will be fine.

They sent a complete set of valves and springs and gasket set FREE.
I still have the valves in my spare parts kit!

Just lately I faxed the factory for a new propeller thrust bearing set and
asked for "Price and avaliability". After hearing nothing for 1 week the
parts I enquired about turned up on my front door in Australia COD.

Yep I think they are ok. Big, heavy, built like battleship, go forever and
boy does that varible pitch prop BITE!!

I've had a Sabb 18HP for over 10 years in my home built 36' cutter. I've
had few problems other than with the fuel and water pumps. Each were easy
to repair and Sabb responded fast each time.

In the past there's been a guy in Florida who stocks parts, but I don't
know whether he's still around. In any case I found ordering from Norway
was just as fast.

I believe that a "SAAB" was an automobile built by Saab Automobile AB,
a Swedish car maker while "SABB" seems to be made by the SABB Motor

marine engines.
