In the spring of 1996 there were many excellent but very expensive (relative to
US) suppliers of marine parts.

As I recall they all were to the left several blocks when stepping off your
boat onto the quay.

It is my understanding that marine repair parts shipped from the US or other
counties than France CLEARLY intentified as repair parts for a yacht in
transit would not be charged expensive duties.

Out experience was it was cheaper to have items delivered from the States,
particularly if crew changes were planned.

There were excellent machine shops also there for handmade or custom repairs.

There are three chandleries and several other related business in Fare Ute,
about a mile from downtown Papeete. Selection was fair: I was able to find
everything I needed but 12V25W nav lights. Prices in 1997 were better than I
remembered from 1992, and the fuel filters were cheaper than West Marine. Also
got the SS gooseneck rewelded for US$30, which I thought was a steal.
