I believe the conversion would be as follows:

(355 g/m^2)(m^2/39 in^2)(oz/28g)((28.5in*36in)/yd) = 8.55 oz/yd

The numbers may be slightly off but probably close enough for sake of
analysis. Hope it helps.

Well there are 28.350 grams per avoirdupois ounce, so 355g
is 12.52226 ounces. And 1 meter is 39.37008 inches; ergo,
1 square meter is 1550.00310 square inches. You're [not-so]
square yard is 1026 square inches.

We've already got our weight in oz/square-meter: 12.52226 oz.
per sq. meter. now we just have to convert that to ounces per
[not-so] square yard. And that's simple algebra:

12.52226 oz. / 1550.00310 in^2 = X oz. / 1026 in^2

Just cross multiply and solve for X:

12.52226 oz * 1026 in^2 = 1550.00310 in^2 * X oz.

X oz = ( 12.52226 oz * 1026 in^2 ) / 1550.00310 in^2

X oz = ( 12.52226 oz * 1026 ) / 1550.00310

X oz = 8.2889 oz.

So you're 355g/m^2 fabric is about 8-1/4 oz. per your
not-so-square yards.

Cheers!

I'm trying to determine if a main sail built in Germany is the correct weight
for a boat. The cloth is spec'd at 355g/sq-meter. I need to know its weight
expressed in ounces/yard, where a "yard" is the unusual measure of 36 inches
by 28-1/2 inches.

Can anyone help with a conversion formula? I'm hoping someone will have this
readily available, so far all I've got is a headache trying to come up with a
solution.

Thanks for the help...

Typo in the formula: The conversion from m^2 to in^2 should be (m^2/39^2
in^2), not (m^2/39 in^2).

The result is correct, though.

Reminds me of my first scuba dives here in the states: trying to convert tank
pressure in "bar" (as shown on my German gauges) into lbs/in^2... ;-)

it's simple
there's 42.82 grams per sailmakers yard (36" x 28.5")
nominally the cloth would be called 8 1/4 oz. here in the States.

Thanks to all that responded with a solution to this question. I've
tried to thank you directly, but may have been defeated by spam traps,
hence this public "thank you".

Best regards to all...

28g / oz, 1.2 yd per sq meter is close enough, if a bit high on the
metric side, so...

355/28=12.7*1.2=15.25 oz/yd close enough?
