Any comments, or recommendations concerning the referenced sailboat are
appreciated. I am currently considering buying one and do not have much
information on them. Thx.

Perry,

If this is the "Citation" series, it is Irwin's last gasp. You can do
better. Irwin always had a terrible reputation. I could go into details,
but suffice to say that it is considered a poor boat even compared to a
Hunter. Start looking again.

Well, Ted has a reputation for maximum boat for minimum money, but you can
work with it. Depends on what plans you have for the boat and how willing
you are to make some *improvements*.

The truth is there are lots of happy Irwin Owners, some so happy with
their smaller Irwins they are thinking of stepping up to a larger Irwin
! You might ask the Irwin Owners sailnet email group about a 31' 1982.
There is a link to register for the email discussion at the Irwin Owners
Homepage. http://www.angelfire.com/fl/irwinsailboats There are a
number of specs links including the specs to a 1981 31 Citation taken
from a factory brochure, Irwin constantly changed designs, so far there
are about 11 specs pages up including one for a 1968 31 Classic.
Estimate the need for _at Least_ 90 specs pages. Irwin constantly made
model changes to interior/ exterior/ tankage etc. I have 1972 37' hull
# 29 that I am very happy with.

You might want to go through sailnets Irwin email archives for more
insights, one posters taken his 84 31' to Bermuda twice.

Perry,

Although I can't comment on the specific boat you named, I can tell you that
Irwin's are well built boats. I liveaboard a '75 32.5ft. CC ketch and don't
have many complaints. No, I am not the fastest boat around, but I'm not the
slowest either. I'll get there and be comfortable about it too. As to the
detractor who claimed Irwin always had a terrible reputation, I say
Bullshit! That barnacle brain probably owns a Macgregor, if that!

I find it difficult to believe that there are lots of happy Irwin owners out
there. I have never surveyed an Irwin that I would buy or encourage a client
to buy. It is practically impossible to sell one so far as I have ever seen.

They are being bought and sold all the time, at very good prices
compared to other boats. Bashing Irwins is similar to the whole
Bayliner bashing tone of rec.boats. Irwins are purpose built for large
amounts of livable interior space and low price for the boat langth.
They may not be the most strongly built boats, but they are capable
sailors. I did a lot of research before buying my 37' Irwin Mk IV.
Right now, a '74 Irwin 33' Mk II is within 400 miles of Hawaii after
making the crossing from L.A. Many I know of have crossed to Bermuda.
Irwins I know of have withstood some very rough weather without a
problem. It's a good boat for the money (like a Chevy) but definitely
not a Caddy. And, as with any other boat, know it's limitations and
stay within the envelope.
