I have a decision to make and would appreciate your responses. Have
sailed a small 25 ft boat mostly east coast coastal for 18 years and
now plan to do more extended cruising. Most will be as a single
hander. I could buy either boat but would have more funds left for
cruising if I went with the Endeavour 32. Do you all think that the
added quality of having the Pacific Seacraft Mariah would be well
worth the difference in terms of extending cruising, accomodations,
sailing characteristics, etc.?

Thanks,

Bob

Have a surveyor look at both boats. then sit down with a respected,
reliable, etc shipwright and figure out what each is going to cost you to
get the boat into cruising shape. do this while seated, the costs may stun
you! :-) Also recommend you check Practical Sailor to reviews on the boats.
They're probably the least biased reviewers you can find.

good luck

Which boat do you enjoy sailing more? Which is most suited (by design &
equipment) for the type of sailing you plan on doing in the near future?
When looking at them while standing back or from a dingy, which pleases you
more?

Generally I've bought boats from the heart rather then the brain -- no
regrets.

Are you talking about a new boat?

And what do you mean by 'extended' cruising - are you going offshore?
Are you planning to single-hand offshore? Or are you just going to
coastal cruise/island hop for a more extended period of time?

I know these boats only by what I've read/heard about them. I've
heard that the Endeavours have a lot of room but sail like pigs (that
was from an owner), and I've heard that Pacific Seacrafts were tough
little boats.

So if I was going to go blue water especially if by myself, I'd go
with the Pacific Seacraft. (Actually if I were to do such a thing I'd
get either a Westsail or a CSY, but that's not what you asked.)

If you are going to island hop, I wouldn't get either one - there's
lots of other choices possible.

Thanks for all the suggestions thus far. No, I don't plan to buy a
new boat. My cruising plans will include island hopping in the
Caribbean at first then to the Pacific and ultimately complete a
circumnavigation. I know that every boat is a compromise. Spent 6
months on my Watkins 25 but stayed near land except for the Gulf
Stream crossing (that's still near land) to the Bahamas. The shoal
draft was a real plus. A model of the Pacific Seacraft, the Mariah
31, has a shoal draft of 4' 5".

Any Mariah sailors out there? All opinions are appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

I'd get on both boats for a few hours, taking copious notes as I tried
everything on for size: the berths, heads, galley and stowage, running
through the motions of typical days, including those weeks cooped up in
the boat. What *I* thought was adequate might be woefully inadequate to
you and vice versa. Remember, 90+% of the time, you'll be on the hook.

I'd put sailing characteristics well down on the list. A good set of
sails, particularly the downwind ones (light and heavy air), can help
even a dog get out of its own way for long distance cruising.
