My wife and I are in purchase mode on a '79 Corbin 39. The boats name is
"Witch of the Wave" and was completed and launched in '86. We had the survey
done last week (waiting for report) and we found something that may or may
not be a problem. Along the port side only, right in the middle of the boot
strip about 4" above the bottom paint are a series of cracks. These cracks (4
or 5) are in the shape of an upside down "L" and appear at very regular 3 1/2
- 4 ft intervals from about 1/3rd the way from the bow to just before the
cockpit. The leg of the "L" extends down for about 7"- 8" and are underneath
the bottom paint. Our first thought was that these were hard spots from
bulkheads or stingers improperly tabbed to the hull, but upon inspection from
the interior this is not the case. Anyone have any idea if this could be the
seams of the sheets of Airex coring? Ever hear of or see this before? I
understand that when the Airex sheets were placed together they were bonded
together and filled, much like sheet rocking a wall. The moisture meter found
moisture only in very close proximity to these cracks, so it seems pretty
localized. The meter was unable to get a reading through the bottom paint so
we don't know how far the water infiltration might extend. We'll probably
sand off the paint and test it again, weather permitting. Do you know of
anyone that I might contact that may have knowledge about how these hulls
were laid-up? I keep hearing about a owners association but can't find it on
the net. Happy Holidays and fair winds

You can find a review of the Corbin 39's which has some information on the
construction and layup at the website below. Click on 'C' and you'll find
it.

I'm the new owner of hull #52 and am also having trouble finding an owners
group. Any Information or pointers that you could pass along would be
appreciated.

Try the keywords "corbin story" or "corbin cutter" and you'll get a report
of Marius Corbin on the fabrication of the hulls.

Without being there to visually inspect your vessel it sounds like there was
some kind of great stress put on that area. If it is indeed airex you will be
amazed at the amount of stress it can withstand. Take a small hammer (plastic
head) and tap on the area and then around the area. See if the sound is
different that is what you will be listening for. If it is the same, it is just
superficial if it sounds just a little hollow then the area has been
compromised. To strengthen this area grind a crack to see how deep the crack is
and then check it for moisture with the meter. Depending on what you find from
that point you will have to make your next decision. 1. negotiate with the
owner on repairs. 2. assume the worst and get estimates (3 min.) from people or
a naval arcitect that has experience with those type of repairs. I can write
you volumes but to not be there is a great disadvantage. Also look on the
inside of the hull in that area and that will tell you if damage extends
through. Corbins are built well as a rule but again I am not there.......ASK
THE PROS. IN YOUR AREA
