As far as the engine goes, I have use Isuzu diesel commercial trucks and
they build a good economical engine. I have, however, in my boating
experience come across 2 boats with Isuzu engine using Hirth (sp?) reverse
gears that had to have the gear replaced with in a few years. Both boats
were build in the '70s with builder installed engines.
The reason for failure was because the reverse gear was being driven in the
wrong direction since the ratio was the same in both directions. One of the
short commings of that particular type of reverse gear was, that the reverse
is achieved by a chain/gear combination which was never intended to drive
continiously. I understand the design has since been changed but there still
may. It may be a possibility of some older boat/engines still using them.

I assume you have in mind the 60 hp four cylinder. I owned one in a
small pickup truck and was very impressed. Long story short, I ended up
giving the poor old girl (with well over 100,000 mi) to a guy who does lawn
work & regularly tows a big trailer. I've watched him - he absolutely
beats the thing to death -- still going strong after two years of his
abuse - he can't kill it.

I dunno - it's certainly not a low speed. marine diesel - taht is to
say, it's a lot like most "marine" diesels these days. Properly marinized
and installed I'd trust it as much as any other diesel of similar speed.

We have a 23 HP / 3000 RPM, 3 cylinder 3KC1 model.. It has about 1800 hours
on it and shows no sign of slowing down. Very reliable in 3+ years of full
time cruising. Marinized by a local supplier in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

I had a Pisces diesel, 2 cylinder, 27 hp. It was a marinized Isuzu engine.
Ran good, solid, big, slow-turning. It vibrated a lot more than the 3
cylinder Yanmar that I replaced it with.

I sold it to a home-builder, and it's still going strong 7 years later. I
did have some trouble getting parts (at least, getting them quickly)--Isuzu
had to get them out of Japan as they didn't stock them in the US. The Isuzu
distibutor in Detroit was very good, service-wise.

GMH has a interest in Isuzu. They make excellent engines, their specs for
heeling etc are equal or better than most marine engines. Many were
designed for 4wd applications. In Asia they are used extensively in the
marine environment. I have 2 friends who have converted their boats to these
engines and they work very well. One thing is for sure you wont get ripped
off for spares like Volvo and Yanmar. Any third world diesel mechanic could
work on them.

We have a C240 block in our Hans 43. This is the 60hp unit that
Klassen, Pisces and others have marinized for years. The engine is
(almost) indestructible. Yes, I am now on my second engine, as the
first finally become too unreliable after 17 years and the
dreaded "previous owner". I now have 3 years and several hunder hours
on it, and it always starts right up. I had one minor problem with the
jerk pump when I first got it, as the timing was off slightly. Tweaked,
and now it is ideal.

I can get all the standard stuff (service manuals, oil filters, etc.
from NAPA or any other auto parts store.

I have several friends who have used them in 24x7 installations for
irrigation pumps, generators, and mine shaft ventilators. With some
extra plumbing so you can change oil "on the fly", they last forever.

I have a C240 as well on a Hirth 250 running in reverse as well. I had to
change the drive plate to quiet the vibration at low RPMs and fix a minor
oil leak in the injector pump. The engine has never let me down, it starts
first crack and runs for hours without any hunting.

I purchased mine from Klassen and I have to say that these folks are the
best in all my experience to deal with. They back their products, their
service folks are competent and their machinists are top rate. I have added
a bunch of front end "toys" to the basic engine and it all just bolted on
and fit.

I pulled a 109 HP volvo out to put the 60hp in and I can make hull speed
under power at 1/10th the fuel costs. The Volvo was on its last legs so I
don't want to start a my engine uses 0.4362 gallons per hour war! :-)

Poor choice in your present job, Capt Ziebell. I can't find any
Federal Stock Numbers on Isuzu parts...(c;

I have one comment on Isuzu, which I think are good components. If
Budget Rent-A-Truck can rent out Isuzu diesels and let idiot gas car
owners drive them around hauling junk day after day and week after
week WITH THE JAKE BRAKE ENGAGED with no serious problems, they must
be one HELLUVA good engine. Every time I rent one to move pianos and
organs I always find the Jake Brake plugging the exhaust up, the
overdrive OFF to maximize RPM. I asked the mechanics at Budget and
they told me, from long experience, an Isuzu truck requires 10% of the
repairs a Chevy or Ford (gas or diesel) van does.....beat to death by
renters!

Larry.....sure glad I'm no longer an ET1 (USS Everglades AD-24) after
that top sentence...hee hee..

Isuzu truck diesels are super. It is the preferred choice for heavy lawn
spray trucks. The 4 cyl turbo diesels will last reliably pulling around
these rigs weighing 15-20,000 lbs or more for years and many miles,
over 200,000 not unusual - just routine maintenance. If the marine
diesels are as good as the truck ones- they are winners.

have isuzu C 250 60 hp since 1980.
well maintained and been submerged four times completely filled with water inside and out. Damn shaft sea failure and dead battery for bilge pump.
great engine.
pulled it out once for a once going over rings and bearings etc and not because of problems.
Just make sure the engine is hooked up to a Borg Warner drive (forward and reverse.

Getting tough to find parts so make sure everything is in good shape.
water pump especially but can be rebuilt.
Proper coolant with anti freeze saves the pump.
