Hi:

When I tried asking this question inside a Catalina owners group, we
found that it was tough to get people to be critical of their own
boats.....
Thus this forum...

I am thinking of buying a C30, for coastal cruising down in
San Diego area....

Planning on popping about 3OK to purchase and outfit.
Looking at a C30, MkII, from the 1989 era.

What are the problems/limitations seen with the C30 as
a weekend cruiser ? It is not a passagemaker, or a racer,
but what weaknesses are seen as inherent to the design ?

Available on the West Coast, we are considering the possibility
also of an Ericcson, but it has a higher price.

Opinions please !!!!!

Thanks,

Jerry T.

Please, with any new or used boat get a survey done by someone experienced
in boat repair before buying.

Remember that you are not going to get negative opinions from professionals
very easily on any boat in an open newsgroup. Too easy to get sued. Much
better to get an independent survey. No surveyor is going to get sued by a
company for saying that a particular boat has particular problems.

How silly! I've never had a problem getting negatives about a boat from
"professionals" or anyone else!
The Catalina 30 is a fine coastal boat, BUT

boats are not suitable for offshore work for this reason.

When I bought my Catalina 27, I easily got the negatives on her from the
group...I guess everyone was in a good mood when you tried!

Catalinas in general are fine for their intended use... namely weekending in
protected waters. They are lightly built, which is fine for this purpose.
It would seem to me to be unwise to try to do more than that, however.

Professionals and amateurs alike are subject to libel suits. Anyway, my
(moderately) negative comments about the Catalina 30 should be available
from dejanews.

You may unduly flatter both the source and impact of your opinions.

Agreed. Catalina and Swan both make awful boats. In addition to this AOL is
awful and has Nazi money, Honda uses human skin to cover steering wheels and
Harrison Ford is computer generated in every film after Blade Runner...he was
actually killed shortly after the film wrapped.

So? Somebody sue me.

You may have missed the point. The earlier posters implicitly fretted that
their own high standing in the boating trade might make them answerable for
defamatory commerical remarks, however presumptuous their underlying
assumptions.

You should have no such fears, and even fewer presumptions. So give it to
whomever you like with both barrels and don't be deterred by any need for
accuracy.

Re : Catalina 30 problems. I'm a former Cat 27 owner. The only problem I
know about on the 30s was common to 27s and 30s.
The lower shrouds terminate at the deck and have no tie rods, close by
bulkheads or other means to transfer load to directly the hull. This can
result in the deck "lifting" when heeled, particularly on older boats
which have softened up a bit. The sliding plastic cupboard doors can fall
out of the windwardside to prove it.
