We need any suggestions for a name for our 17 foot Tempest runabout.
Being a married couple in our early fourties with no children we want a
cute and catchy name. Since we live in Canada and the Canadian officials
seem to frown on any alcohol related names, we dont want one of those.
Well we do but dont want to be pulled over by the cops all day long :-)
We have been married 3 years and both on second marriages and we cuise
the 1000 Islands mainly if this helps with ideas. Thank you in
advance!

The only phrase that I can think of is "Toonies Last Post" because that will
be that last time you'll have any money in your pocket after buying a boat.

I like Teacup, too -- but maybe you could play off the Tempest with Stormy.
Since you like to explore the 1000 Island area, how about Island Hopper? Since
you're both on your second marriages, why not call it A Second Chance? The
thing with boats is to give them boat names, not something that's so silly or
different

There used to be a tradition where the first letter of the boat name should
be the same as that of the boat.class/make.
Has this tradition disappeared, or was it just a fairy tale?

One of the reasons I like Teacup.

That's along the lines I was thinking of....but it's a 17 footer, so I
opted for "teacup".

However, it's not my boat.

I was in Cape Town recently and of course I "walked the docks" to check
things out. I did not notice this phenomenon to any extent.

Who practiced this tradition?

I don't know what class/make this was but I have it sort of in the
back of my mind that it was a Cal or something like that.

In horses, (at leas non TBs) the foal's name usually starts with the
first initial of his mother.

Just to make sure we understand each other this time, Rosalie, are you
saying that you remember that it was at one time a tradition to name Cal
sailboats with names that started with the letter "C"?

If so, who practiced _this_ tradition?

Thanks.

Not just C but CAL. I only remember that someone asked for help with
a name for a boat that would describe him that started with, or had
the sequence of letters CAL in the name. It wasn't that long ago -
and it was an email list that I was on. And I don't know for sure
that it was a tradition, except that he gave us some other names of
sailboats in the same one-design class which were so named.

Do you therefore mean that you remember that at one time it was a tradition
to name Cal sailboats with names that started with the letters "CAL"? This
is surprising to me.

Thanks for the elaboration. However I must admit that I have absolutely no
idea what you are talking about. Maybe I'm just weary from today's workout

Bottoms up is a drinking thing , and it is the bottom of the glass
that is up. I'm not very conversant in this area, as I (like your

Hi Yall
Thanks for all of your suggestions for naming our boat! Keep-em coming
please and I'm certain we're going to pick one of the suggestions. Heres
another bit of info that might help with a suggestion,,just after we
bought it and went on vacation, my wife fell through a dock that was
under construction and broke her arm. She had to undergo surgery and now
has a titanium plate with 5 pins in her arm. That was day #2 of the
vacation so needless to say the vacation was a bust!
Of the suggestions so far Thousand Island Dressing ,,, Seavorced,,,
Damdifino,,, Revenue Cutter and many more went over good. I'll let the
group now which one we pick and the winner is invited to tie up at our
dock (not under construction) for some drinks next summer :-)
Thanks again guys

In masses! First 6 months this year 1,487,714 crossings over the Oresund
Bridge. Built to facilitate the Swedes to drink in Denmark ;-)??
Bob, you own one of the bar(s)?
Cheers Wim

just a sugestion
as i live on the west coast of scotland, i also use my boat for
exploring, i have a 18ft cathederal hull with cuddy not flashy but
practical. my boat is named eilean a cheo, it is gaelic for 'island of
mists.how about a gaelic name my suggestion is a mouthfull and would
have people guessing.it is 'Te Bheag nan Eilean', you would pronounce
it, 'che vec nan yellan'and it means 'little lady of the islands. and
by the way, it is also whisky,[Uisge Beatha].If you are interested
where i sail on the map i am 18 miles south of oban in argyll i live
on the island of luing. we dont have 1000 island but enough to keep me
occupied. drop in if your sailing by.
