Someone mentioned Marvel Mystery Oil in another message. I've been
told that MMO is really nothing more than Automatic Transmission Fluid
and that if you love MMO you might as well use ATF since it's cheaper
and available EVERYWHERE. It sure smells and looks like MMO. Does
anybody really know?

Oh, no.....Marvel Mystery Oil is made by the same chemical geniuses in
the same squeaky-clean, expensive laboratory as OEM-branded two stroke
TC-W3 that sells for $30/gallon, in small, custom batches matched to
the serial number of your outboard. It couldn't POSSIBLY be just
re-labeled transmission fluid from plain, old oil companies.....(c;

Make sure it's the synthetic type. Buy the most expensive bottles.
Everyone knows they are the only ones suitable for use in YOUR
engine....hee hee.

Light mineral oil with solvents added.

NOT ATF. And WD40 is NOT diesel in a can.

Believe what you want. The information you get here is worth what you
pay for it.

WD 40 is a petroleum solvent (that evaporates), leaving a trace of
silicone behind. It does not leave anything behind that resembles diesel.

There are better lubricants, but no other product has more uses than WD40.

Starting fluid, metal polish, it will dry out wet electrical ("WD 40"
stands for the 40th formula for a water displacement product). It will
clean up resins and paint spills. What do you use it for?

Remember, I know a little about a lot of subjects, so I'm easy to argue with.

rumor has it -- and I'm asking you to comfirm or deny if you can -- that WD-40
became quite a bit less effective as a starting aid for diesel engines when
they took propane out as the propellant.

This is true. This combination is also known as penetrating oil.

ATF is a mineral oil of approximately 10W viscosity with additives for the
hydraulic application for which it is intended. The difference in types of
ATF (type A, type F, etc.) lies in this additive package and how it reacts
to the different types of friction material used in the clutches of various
transmission. All types have the same viscosity and lubricating properties.

I've never used it for diesel starting fluid, I've got a Ford Lehman 120
in my trawler, it has never needed starting fluid, yet.

I have used it in outboards and cars. It is safer than using gasoline,
and far more convenient.

The last time I used it for outboard starting fluid, it worked fine. I
don't even know if the can I used had propane in it. I don't know when
they took propane out, of if it really ever had propane in it in the
first place.

This was called "plausible deniability" in the Reagan administration.
