Westerbeke diesels are generally well thought of. I have a 13 HP
Westerbeke in my boat. It has about 1200 hrs on it at this point and is
running just fine. Like any piece of machinery though basic maintenance
must be done or you will usually pay the price.

Depending on what base engine Westerbeke used it could be good or bad.
They have used so many different brand engines over the years sometimes
it is difficult to get any info unless you can identify the base brand.
The only 10hp diesel I know is the Bukh which is a Danish engine that
is good as long as it does not need parts. Westerbeke also used Perkins,
Leland, British Ford, and most recently Mitsubishi.

Westerbeke does not manufacture engines. It takes engines made by others and
turns them into marine engines by adding the components need for boats as
opposed to other activities such as trucks. Westerbekes are good, but probably
not top of the line. One advantage of Westerbekes is that you can always get
parts. One disadvantage is that you always pay a premium for those parts.

as Carl's apparently is. My engine was based on a British Ford block and
when Westerbeke stopped using this engine they disavowed any knowledge of
parts for it.
I don't think I will buy any of their products again.

> BobBob - Sorry to hear about your difficulties. My Westerbeke came with
the boat. It is older, but I don't have any complaints about the way it
runs. At least it does run, so far. I am not sure I would buy a
Westerbeke if I replaced this one or had a choice in another boat. One
of the reasons is the parts are too expensive. With expensive parts,
poor service and unavailability of parts, Westerbeke puts itself behind
the eight ball. On the other hand, I don't think I would not buy an
other wise nice boat because it had a Westerbeke (obviously).

I have an L25 westerbeke and am quite happy with it.
I found that this model is built on a 1600 cc ford cortina engine and it
was installed in my C&C to replace the
atomic bomb that was in there. The engine block configuration is very
strong and I have replaced the fresh water pump bearing and impeller and
paid dearly for the parts 600 beans for the shaft, bearing and impleller
from westerbeke and then found out that they are identical to the stock
water pump guts as the cortina parts.
Other than that sort of thing it runs beautifully and smooth. 1850 hrs.

I have a Westerbeke Model Four-91 and have had good luck with it but does
anyone know who the real engine manufacture is for this engine? It
replaced an Atomic 4 in my 1965 Islander 32 in 1974 so its been around for
a while.

Thanks

I think most four cylinder diesel Westerbekes of that vintage were
Mercedes Benz engines.

The 4-91 is a Perkins and parts can be obtained from any Perkins dealer.
Westerbeke never to my knowledge used Mercedes but they used most others:
Bukh, Perkins, Ford Cortina, Leland, Mitsubishi, and others.

Byron,

Who made my 1979 Westerbeke 30 (4 cyl.)? I tried to get new glow plugs
for it, and was told $100 each by the Westerbeke distributor. The one
glow plug still functioning is a Champion, but the part # is long
discontinued, and champion lists no substitution. I hate the idea of
repowering just because I can't afford the parts!

Try a different source. I got a quote of $160 for a thermostat for my
Universal diesel, which is serviced by Westerbeke. I would have paid it
but they didn't have the heat range I wanted. I then tried Doc Freemans in
Seattle. They sent me a new thermostat, at the temperature range I wanted
and it was UPS shipped to me and I recieved it in less than 24 hours.
Price was $19 plus tax and about $4 for shipping. Doc Freemans number is
1-800-247-2149.

Good luck.

sources other than the Westerbeke dealer. Doc Freemans is generally a
good source for hard to get engine and other boats parts. However, if
you have an older Westerbeke don't hold out great hopes for success at
finding parts. Perhaps we Westerbeke owners should share information
about where to find alternative parts, used parts and rebuilt parts. It
could save us a lot of money.

My Westerbeke is a 'marinized' (sp) Perkins. For the engine itself you
can find cheaper parts through their distributers.

I think I responded last night but here it is again if I did, sorry.

Some of the older Westerbeke engins are marinized Perkins. I was able to
get parts from a local Perkins dealer.
